    Ecclesiastes 9:4

    King James Version (KJV)

    4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

    At the time of this the people despised dogs and they honored lions. One is better off to be alive and have no honor than dead and have honor because the living also has has hope. The living can enjoy life, but the dead cannot, shall I say the book is closed on their earthly life.

    It's better than starting another Cal-Arminian thread.

    Actually, I wondered how to interpret that verse, but Bob Alkire did a good job explaining it.

    Bear in mind that at the present I do not have my Bible, so I don't know this verse's context.

    To what does a living dog refer to? A coward? The humble?

    Same question about the dead lion. The brave? The haughty? The reckless?

    Curious.

    The context (Ecclesiastes 9:1-6), to me, is about how death comes to us all and while we are alive, we should make the best life of what we are given.

    "For I considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them. All things come alike to all:

    One event happens to the righteous and the wicked;
    To the good, the clean, and the unclean;
    To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.
    As is the good, so is the sinner;
    He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.

    This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

    For the living know that they will die;
    But the dead know nothing,
    And they have no more reward,
    For the memory of them is forgotten.
    Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;
    Nevermore will they have a share
    In anything done under the sun."

    Job 14:7-12

    King James Version (KJV)

    7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
    8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
    9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
    10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
    11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
    12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

    :laugh: Pup's been at the doggy-daycare today (we're using it to socialize her with other dogs and to work off some of that puppy energy). Wifey should be home with her shortly. Until then it's useless to sleep, because of the happy-squealy-rowdy greeting that I get.:D

    Matthew 7:6

    King James Version (KJV)

    6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
