Lattimore, who was a Greek scholar died in 1984. He was a classical Greek authority on Homer and others. From the dust jacket it says he had no pretensions about being a Bible scholar. "Lattimore's aim was to provide a simple, literal redering in which the syntax and order of the Greek dictate the character of the English Bible."

He followed the Westcott and Hort text. He also did not use chapter and verse divisions.

Here are some snips from Mark in comparison with the NIV.

    1:45
NIV : stayed outside in lonely places
LT : remain outside in unfrequented places

    7:35
N : his tongue was loosened

To be continued. I'm feeling a bit weak.

Kinda tough to give the references, eh? (my Lattimore has no versification)

Here is one very literal rendering (transliteration, actually) of Lattimore's that struck me (Galatians 6:17) --
Henceforth, let no one give me trouble, for I carry the stigmata of Jesus on my body.
Here is the TR Greek of the verse --
Τοῦ λοιποῦ κόπους μοι μηδεὶς παρεχέτω ἐγὼ γὰρ τὰ στίγματα τοῦ Κυριοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματί μου βαστάζω
This is the one and only time this plural of stigma (Strong's #6742) is used in the NT --
a mark pricked in or branded upon the body. To ancient oriental usage, slaves and soldiers bore the name or the stamp of their master or commander branded or pricked (cut) into their bodies to indicate what master or general they belonged to, and there were even some devotee's who stamped themselves in this way with the token of their gods
The word come to us through the Middle English stigme, brand; and that from Latin stigma, stigmat-, tattoo indicating slave or criminal status; and that from Greek, tattoo mark, from stizein, stig-, to prick.

Despite RC mysticism, I found "stigmata" much more poignant than merely "marks".
