    Jn. 17:17 ¶ Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

    Some on here have suggested that the reason for disagreement and division and confusion and denominationalism is that everyone brings a certain set of background baggage with them to the table when interpreting the Word of God.

    No doubt it is true that we all have various backgrounds and experiences and influences when we come to the Word of God. However, division and disagreement over a particular text of scripture is ultimately determined by eisgesis versus exegesis or the method by which one approaches the scripture IN SPITE OF their various backgrounds and influences.

    No verse of scripture teaches two contradictory principles or precepts.

    Scriptures teach truth and that truth is not dependent upon YOU or anything about YOU. Scriptures will teach the same truth yesterday as they will a thousand years from now when you and your background baggage are long gone.

    The Scriptures command us to "rightly divide the word of truth" and that is the precise problem for division and error. Eisgesis is coming to the scriptures with your background and influences and READING THOSE THINGS INTO THE TEXT. Exegesis is READING OUT OF THE TEXT the truth the Spirit of God wrote into the text.

    If any two people in any two different denominations come to a specific text of scripture and apply proper rules of exegesis they will arrive at the same truth - it is just that simple.

    However, the reason that one or both do not arrive at the truth of that text is because they are either ignorant of proper rules of exegesis or due to a spiritual problem refuse to apply those rules due to a heart that refuses to accept what exegesis clearly shows that text teaches.

    It is just that simple! All false doctrine can be traced to eisgesis and/or a spiritual condition (1 Tim. 4:1-2) that refuses to accept what they can see the text clearly teaches.

    JRP is an acronym that I use to describe an EISGETIC rule used by those who are false teachers and teach false doctrine. It is a principle all false teachers and cults use and apply constantly. It is their NORM in handling scriptures.

    The "J" stands for JUMP. When you show them a text and context that proves their interpretation is wrong, instead of demonstrating from that text the truth of their position they JUMP out of that text and then "R" run to another text in order to "P" pit it against the other scripture.

    Those who hold error manifest they are holding error by the very use of this JRP eisgetical rule. The truth does not contradict any scripture and every scripture in its context will support the truth. Hence, those who apply JRP are publicly advertising they are teaching errors.

    There are some on this forum which apply this eisgetical principle in nearly every response they make. The problem is that the text they jump to when studied contextually does not not support their position either and when you prove that guess what their response is? Yep, JRP again and again. Usually about the fourth JPR they then claim that they have proven their position by the past three JRP posts. Absurd? Yes! But watch how common it is with some on this forum.

    How do you deal with a person who makes the JRP their practice? Refuse to leave a text until they either admit they cannot deal with it. If you jump with them to another text and show them by that context they are wrong they will simply keeping hopping.

    All for whom Christ died will believe the Truth. That is exactly what Christ prays for in that text Jn 17:17. That Prayer is answered whenever the Holy Spirit gives New birth to one of the Elect and conversion 2 Thess 2:13

    13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

    John 17:17 is directly applied to those who have already received the truth of the gospel but are being set part in progressive sanctification by the truth of God's Word.

    Not all saved people do receive EVERY truth. However, their progression in sanctification is determined by the truth they do receive.

    Jesus reveals truth to his people according to the measure of faith and grace given to each one of them (Rom. 12:3,7) in keeping with His indivdual purpose for their life (Jer. 1:7; Eph. 2:10b).

    Not every child of God is given the same capacity. Not every child of God progresses at the same rate of sanctifiction or to the same level of sanctification but whatever rate and level of sanctification they do reach is through the "word of truth."

    Biblicist--

    Seems I recall reading about someone who made the observation that "A Text Without A Context Is Merely A Pretext."

    I wonder whether or not you think that he may have just hit on something there......Surely it didn't come from some of our BB friends. :smilewinkgrin::smilewinkgrin:

    "Peace be unto you."

    Would also say that there are varying opinions on certain doctrines BECAUSE the lord chose to keep it ambigious!

    Such as the timing of his return, as the IMPORTANT and essential doctrine to hold would be that the Bible teaches that he will have a second coming, but not exactly the events and timing of it!

    No its not, it also directly applies to them that shall believe the Truth through their word ! Jn 17:17-20

    17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

    18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

    19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

    20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

    That there is the effect of the prayer, those who shall believe through their word, Will do so in answer to the Prayer of Christ, because they shall believe as the result of the Sanctification of the Spirit unto belief of the Truth ! 2 Thess 2:13

    13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

    You have such a warped one track mind that you cannot deal with scripture with integrity but must force scripture to fit your warped theology.

    Look at verse 20 and you will see that his application is also for BELIEVERS only. The term "sanctify" is used in a context of believers only. .

    Look at Christ's own application! He prays that God will sanctify them as HE HIMSELF WAS SANCTIFIED and Jesus was not claiming he had to be born again, or converted but rather his own growth in wisdom and in knowledge through the Word and his own life SET APART unto truth by the truth:

    19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

    Do you think Christ had to be born again, converted to faith? No! He was always a believer and His life had been "SET APART" unto truth by obedience to the truth.

    You are attempting again to derail a thread. This OP is about EXEGESIS versus EISGESIS not your lame erroneous doctrines.

    Insults will get you no where. It remains that Jn 17:17 is directly applied to everyone who shall believe Jn 17:20

    Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

    Christ's sanctified Himself in Death, so that they [All for whom He died, not just the Apostles, should be sanctifed by the Truth]

    Jn 17:19

    And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

    That is my point! It is applied to BELIEVERS ONLY and that aspect of their life called PROGRESSIVE SANCTIFICATION. It is applied to believers just as it is applied to Christ. Christ applies it to his own life as a believer and the setting apart of his life unto God by the Word of truth.

    That is my point. In fact, the reason for future believers, was based upon the Answer to Christ's prayer here Jn 17:17

    17 Sanctify them[All for whom He died] through thy truth: thy word is truth.

    18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

    19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

    20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

    Also, it was the reason why all the OT Saints believed the Truth of the Gospel ! Abraham was sanctified through the Truth and believed it because of Christ's Death for him , for he was one of His Seed !

    We all "see through a glass, darkly". No one is capable of discerning the truth 100% correctly 100% of the time. That's why there are denominations.

    Oh, I should make an exception to the above -- The Biblicist, and maybe a few more on here. :rolleyes:

    No one claimed to know 100% of the truth did they? I certainly did not!

    What I claimed was that every error is due to one of two things (or a combination of both) and that is it is based upon improper handling of God's Word and/or a spiritual impass that refuses to acknowledge what it sees to be true.
