Electoral College Polls

I really like that map. The only states I disagree with is NC and VA which I believe Obama will carry in the end. I do think the Republicans will pick up IA, IN, and FL. Also, I think it is possible for Romney to pick off OH and WS if things go his way. I still believe Obama will win by a narrow margin.

 

At least in 4 months, this will be over for a while. I too think that President Obama will prevail. Of course, a lot can happen in 4 months.

 

That is not an endorsement on my part, just reality of numbers. What I cannot figure out is that although it seems he will win the electoral college, the unemployement rate hovers around 8.2%. No President has ever been reelected with that sky high number. Bush would never have won if he could have run in 2008.

There has been two Presidents defeated in my memory for reelection, Carter and Bush the First. The election of 1980 was a watershed election, and shows what can happen when the Republicans nominate a conservative. I am not so sure why Bush lost, the only thing going against him was the start of a recession. There was also a strong third party.

I do know one thing, Mr. Obama will not get 40% of the vote in my state. In the Democratic primary in May, he got 52% to 48% for undecided. On top of that, our primaries are closed.

 

Also, making a speech and saying, "Read my lips! NO NEW TAXES!", and then raising taxes didn't help.

Congressional democrats conned him into approving the tax hike on recreational type 'vehicles' (if memory is correct) and then turned around and beat him to death over it at election time.

 

So you are saying he didn't have the fortiitude to stand up to Congress. Oh how one spins the facts for their partisan heroes. Bush himself has said he wishes he never said "Read my lips". The problem is a President must not box himself in. Never say never. Taxes are there for a reason, and sometimes they must be raised. I hate paying tax as much as the next guy...in fact I pay a lot in taxes. But they are a reality of life in a modern society.

 

Salty, a good point. What I am not understanding is why Bush lost for saying "read my lips" while otherwise having at least an average Presidency, and Obama will probably win with the employment picture in shambles? It does not seem consistent.

 

Bush's remark about taxes had no impact on my vote when he ran for reelection. I thought about voting for Perot, but in the end, did not.

 

That is probably the basis of the first requirements to vote in the United States. Not that I think they were right, but aside from being male, one had to own property. I guess their reasoning was that it takes some sort of intelligence to have earned the money to own property.

As I said above, I am glad the restrictions for property have been lifted. I agree with your point however, some people have no business voting. I cannot think of a screening mechanism that would be Constitutional. A test would probably not pass as a screening device, after the games played in some of the southern states fifty or so years ago when tests were given to African Americans in ways to assure failure to get them away from the polls.
