Speaking at a July 16 campaign event in Cincinnati, Ohio, President Obama insisted that he does not make the same mistake twice, and that he would remain steadfast in his efforts to subsidize the “green” energy industry. “I don’t know about you, but in my life what I’ve found, you know, sometimes I do boneheaded things, I make mistakes,” Obama conceded. “I find, when I try something that doesn’t work, then I don’t try it again. I don’t — you don’t go back to doing something that didn’t work.”

Soon after, the president promised that he would continue to “invest” in alternative-energy technology if he is reelected in November. “We’re going to invest in American energy,” he vowed. “Yes, we want to continue to expand our production of oil and natural gas, but I also want to make sure we are the leaders in solar and biodiesel — the energy of the future that can help reduce dependence on foreign oil.”

The Department of Energy (DOE) under the Obama administration doled out roughly $9 billion for solar and wind projects from 2009 to 2011, resulting in the conception of a whopping 910 direct jobs — equaling about $9.8 million per job — according to a report by the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Overall, an analysis by the Heritage Foundation reveals that a startling 19 companies that were granted federal loans or grants by the Obama administration have either filed for bankruptcy or are currently in the process of doing so:

These include Evergreen Solar, SpectraWatt, Solyndra, Beacon Power, which got $43 million; AES’ subsidiary Eastern Energy, Nevada Geothermal, which received $98.5 million; SunPower, which got $1.5 billion from the government; First Solar, which received $1.46 billion from the federal government; Babcock & Brown, an Australian company which received $178 million from the administration; Ener1, a subsidiary EnerDel that received $118.5 million; Amonix, which received $5.9 million; The National Renewable Energy Lab; Fisker Automotive; Abound Solar, which received $400 million; Solar Trust of America; A123 Systems, which received $279 million; Willard & Kelsey Solar Group, which received $6 million; Johnson Controls, which received $299 million; and Schneider Electric, which received $86 million.

    Emphasis Mine!

Exploring and investing in new energy sources has been a hallmark of both Democratic and Republican administrations for decades. Sadly, little has been done. I applaud the President's support for this cause, to help give America independence from foreign sources of energy.

Without that, our economy is in the hands of potential enemies.

New energy sources like - fracking, natural gas, oil drilling.

Obama is wasting money on pipe dreams - when we should be building pipelines and oil processing plants.

The current green energy plans will never produce anything of substance.

The sun can't be used at night or cloudy days - the wind doesn't blow consistently.

Why invest money in technology that is down more than half of the time?

New technology is just that...it has to be developed. You cannot drill your way to energy independence. As for no sun or no wind, that is what storage cells are for. Obviously you are not an EE.:tongue3:

I don't need to be an EE to know that the recent discoveries of fossil energy resources in the U.S. mean that we can drill our way to energy independence.

We don't have the luxury of either time or money to chase furturistic pie in the sky energy sources like ZPM's or dylithium crystals.

Just how good and how expensive are those storage cells?

Those Zero Point Moduals on Stargate Atlantis seemed to work pretty good.

Perhaps Magnetic Poles can gate into another galaxy and pick up a couple of them.

The Solyndra debacle really turned me off, guys.

There is funding research in labs (like LANL and Oak Ridge), then there is making federal loan guarantees to poorly-managed private companies that cannot turn a profit.

Ummm....no you can't. The nature of oil is that it is a world wide commodity with demand rising in other parts of the world faster than it is in the United States. Oil is easily measured and transported. Therefore, unless you can force multi-national corporations to confine their sales of oil within the United States, we can never drill our way to energy independence. Any oil drilled in the U.S. will find foreign marketplaces. It's happening right now. The U.S. is a net exporter of oil.

Wind and solar energy is not easily transported and is a true natural resource, meaning whatever you've got inside your country is yours. It's pretty hard to export wind and sunlight!

There is much more oil in the US than is currently being drilled. Wind and solar has very limited advantages and while it can be a small part of the overall picture it is just that...a very small part. Nuclear energy is a good option as well.

If the U.S. were to find and drill 25%, 33%, even 50% more oil than it is currently drilling, we would not be energy independent, because the oil companies would sell that oil to China, Japan, Europe, India, etc. Prices would go down but we'd still be using an energy source that will eventually run out.

Not necessarily. MP was talking about storage cells. Those can be transported.
