such as when the ESV 'updated', NIV did, also the nasb, or do you prefer to stay and study from "old version?"

At this point I'm treating Bible translations like I treat OS updates....I do it when I must and generally don't apply it to my older machines. (not sure how that last part works...)

Anyhoo, essentially these publishers can do what they want, I'm happy with my translations as I have them (I use the HCSB for preaching & teaching.) I might go buy an update but haven't yet.

is there any reaql reason to update though?

Can see doing such for either nasb/Niv, but are the rest updated enough to warrent a replacement?

And yet ANOTHER reason why reading the KJV is a plus....no updates to purchase! Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it? If they got it right the first time they wouldn't need to update all the time!

The folks who operate nuclear power plants made a sad discovery when TMI melted down. It seems the operators did not really understand how the plant behaved under off normal conditions, and because of the rapid change in the plants condition, the information came in in such volume and speed the operators were overwhelmed and did not respond to what was important, i.e. keeping the core covered with liquid water vice steam.

It takes us, mere mortals, some time to read through a new version and if we have a file of sermon notes based on passages, even longer to update them if the changes alter what is said. Thus if our baseline study bible is updated too frequently, mainly due to sales goals, it actually undercuts the presentation of well studied sermons.

You're not serious are you? No, you can't be serious.

Because everybody knows the KJV which most people are familiar with is actually the fourth revision since 1611 which came out in 1769. So they didn't get it right the first time. In fact the translators acknowledged that they got it wrong and began updating immediately following the first publication. On the wall of my study I have Bible leaves from the four revisions where you can see some of the changes.

Then came the RSV and, ultimately, the NKJV. Which are both updates to the KJV...though the NKJV moreso.

i tend to buy the updated version at some point, but it's not a priority for me.

i think it was important to buy the updated NASB95 and the NLT04.

for the ESV, i bought an inexpensive outreach edition.

i may buy the NIV11 at some point. the HCSB? not interested.

    How Sad...

Sounds to me like that is just a good description of leaving the matter of the accuracy and authority of what is supposed to be God's Word(s) in the hands of and dependent upon human reasoning and human trial and error to determine not only how it should be interpreted but also whether or not it is even authoritative and accurate. How very sad. I prefer to "plant my flag" (so to speak) on the high ground of one Book. It's a battle I no longer have to fight....and for that I genuinely THANK GOD! I can skip the argumentation and rest in the declaration!:applause:

Anyone who does not read Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic must trust the translation team to get it right for them.

Unless you read Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic, you are still in the same boat that I (and many others) are in. You must trust that the translators of your preferred version got it right - same as I must trust the translators of my version.

In my area, picking a Bible version is not a battle. I am free to use what I choose, and others are free to use what they choose - nobody makes Bible versions an issue.

I will usually buy the updates of the versions I use most. The rest I will let be until it needs to be replaced.

If there is an update and I want it I generally find a way to add it to my collection. For me, I have several editions of the ESV and have no desire to keep up with any further revisions. Same with the HSCB and NLT SE. I have a NIV11 but don't use it, instead if I'm feeling like reading the NIV I use the 84 edition.

Generally I use the NASB95 for study. I know that there is some chatter about a revision but I'm good with the current edition. I would be very surprised if the NKJV gets revised anytime soon.

    Trust In The Lord.....ONLY

Well TC....I don't read Greek,Hebrew or Aramaic and probably never will this side of heaven (but I do respect and applaud those who do).

That said...I DO NOT "TRUST" ANY MAN...whether he reads Greek,Hebrew or Aramaic OR is part of a "translation team" with "high, impeccable credentials". A little lesson in Bible belief is in order but let me first say this...I am no better than you (or anyone else) nor are you any "better" than me regardless of your level of learning or knowledge. We are all in the same boat in God's view. Sinners in need of a Saviour and then a surrendered life in submission to Him and His Word. With that said,I believe the following:

Psalm 118:8 "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man."

My trust is not in "translators" or original language readers/speakers though I am respectful and thankful for all of them (unless they use their talents to wrongly correct or corrupt God's Word). My trust is in the Lord to preserve and protect His Word and make it available to me. He uses imperfect men to accomplish His work but He and He alone is able to guide and shepherd the work of those hands and hearts He chooses to use so that the end result is perfection. My position on this matter is a product of only one thing.....faith. I trust the Lord...though imperfectly at times. Thank God He isn't done with me yet. Thank God, He can and will still use a "crooked stick to hit a straight lick". God Bless You.

i have to admit: i admire the fact that no revisions have been made to the NKJV since its release in 1982.

it's as if they said, "it is enough" or "it is finished." :)

they used the same sources as the KJV team did, so in a sense would be 'finished!"
