    “Jesus’ Blood and Righteousness”

    “THE SOLID ROCK”

My hope is built on nothing less
    Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
    All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

    —Edward Mote (1797-1874)

Edward Mote was not from a Christian Home, but Became a Christian around age 18. But did not immediately go into ministry. Instead, He became a successful cabinet maker for the next 37 years.
He then answered a call to ministry at age 55 and pastored a Baptist church in Sussex for the next 21 years until age 76.
But, it was during his career as a cabinetmaker that this hymn came into being. He was walking to work one day when he got the idea to write a hymn, by the time he arrived at work he had the refrain finished.

What is the HOPE of Righteousness?

“My HOPE Is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”

Rebekah Stark says this about hope: “Edward Mote uses the word hope the way the Bible does, which is not exactly the way we usually use it. We use it to express our desire for something to happen in the future, and as long as there’s even the slightest possibility that it will happen, we can still say we hope for it. But biblical hope is not just wishing for something that may or may not happen. There is an assurance in biblical hope. Those who hope, as the Bible uses the term, confidently expect the good things promised to them”

Mote’s original title for the hymn was
"The Immutable Basis of a Sinner’s Hope." (Isn’t that a good title?)

The middle stanzas talk about the rough times when this hope supports us:
…When darkness seems to hide his face,
…In ev‘ry high and stormy gale,
    …in the whelming flood
…When all around my soul gives way

So that eventually… (in the last verse)

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
    Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

(Phil. 3:8-9 [The apostle Paul said ‘I count all earthly things as loss’] …that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.)

So…Where is Your hope, Joy, security? Your own goodness, your bank account, your good reputation? Or is it in Jesus’ blood and HIS righteousness.

The Wise Man build his house upon the rock, and “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” Christ is the Solid Rock, His Blood, His righteousness provide the foundation for our salvation.
All other ground is Sinking Sand.

    Faith:
    Baptist

12 I wrote up something earlier tonight that I wanted to post as a thread and was trying to decide just how to do that, then I read this post and am therefore going to post it here. I am doing that because what I say about two key words in my thoughts, grace and faith, also apply to that righteousness of God of which along with Jesus blood, Mr Mote based his hope. which BTW I believe to be eternal life. First I am going to pull down something from your post that I believe needs to be pointed out.

(Phil. 3:8-9 [The apostle Paul said ‘I count all earthly things as loss’] …that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.)

The KJV doesn't translate that verse quite like that as you know, however I believe the KJV to be correct here, which you will learn from my post.
KJV And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

According to Romans 3:19-31 the righteousness of God became available for the elect in the same manner and at the same time as the other two key words of my post. Remember, Mr. Mote's Hope was based on the blood (death) of Jesus and the Righteousness of God. God the Father laid the sin of the world on his Son Jesus and Jesus died because of this sin being laid on him.

My thoughts from earlier tonight or should I now say yesterday.

For by grace are ye saved. Eph 2:8

    Grace?

For the grace of God that brings salvation hath appeared to all men, Titus 2:11

Grace brings salvation. Exactly when did grace bring salvation? When did it first appear, this grace that brings eternal salvation?

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 5:9,10

Jesus, being made perfect became the author (the beginning) of eternal salvation (GRACE) and at that same time also called an high priest after the order of Mekchisedec.

    Just when was that?

So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another, Thou a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 5:5,6 But God raised him from the dead: God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Acts 13:30,33

The grace of God that brings salvation appeared the moment God the Father raised Jesus the Son of God, from the dead.

For by grace are ye saved through the faith.

The faith took place before the grace that brought salvation for all men.

What removed man from being, under the law, the schoolmaster, concluded by the scriptures to be under sin, that is condemned to death? What removed sin from having dominion over you because of you being under the law? ----Compare Romans 6:1-14 with Galatians 3:22-26 The faith of Jesus Christ removed one from being under the schoolmaster. The death of Jesus Christ removed one from being under the law, the schoolmaster.

It was the death of Jesus the Christ. Christ died for us. When Christ died for us we were no longer under the law, condemned to death for sin. It was the death of Jesus the Christ that was the faith that brought the grace of God by which we shall be saved.

When Jesus calls, one receives the Holy Spirit begetting one as a child of God and one becomes an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ. An heir of what? What has Jesus inherited that we are still heirs of until the appearing of the Lord again?

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with [them] according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Added after reading your post this AM.

The righteousness of God was the Grace of Life he Gave his Son Jesus after that Jesus who was without sin had been made sin for us and had given his life in our stead.

Is that not the gospel truth?

The following two articles argue on opposite sides of the debate regarding the translation of a certain phrase found in Philippians, Galatians, and Romans:

    Favoring "IN":

    http://www.dtl.org/versions/article/faith.htm

    Favoring "of":

    http://undeception.com/pistis-iesou-christou/

HOWEVER, whichever side you agree with, I think 2 things are true...

    1. There is no doubt that without Jesus' Faithfulness to fulfill his mission of salvation, even to the cross, we would all be lost.

    2. Personal faith is ALSO necessary, shown by Romans 3:25...
    v. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—22 the righteousness of God through faith [IN or OF] Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for fall have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Christ's faithfulness accomplishes salvation, our faith is the means by which we receive the righteousness that Christ provides.

Please critique my total posts against the word of God for I would like yours and all other opinions. I understand about the in and of, in the articles you posted, which was the reason I brought it up concerning Phil 3.

    _____________________________________________________________

Actually Romans 3:25 says just what my post says. It was the faith of Christ, his blood, his death through which God before placed, a propitiation (a place of mercy) slain from the foundation of the world. Christ being a place of mercy, a propitiation, redeems the elect from being under the law, that is does away with the condemnation of the law, death for sin that was appointed without the death of Christ to apply is ones stead.

Of course if the dead be not raised then Christ is not raised and that faith of Christ would be null and void and Paul says in 1 Cor 15. For it to be of any effect there must be life given to the one who died for all. That is where grace comes in. It is through the resurrection of Christ we have hope of life.

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, <(being in Christ the place of mercy) we shall be saved by his life. <(His resurrected life, the grace of God) Romans 5:10 Also: For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection: Rom 6:5

For by grace are ye saved, through the faith; (of Jesus in his death, his blood) according to his mercy (God before the foundation of the world set forth his dead Son a place of mercy, a propitiation) he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit; (The grace of God according to the righteousness of God.)

Man is bound and determined to save himself by saying the faith of the man contributes to his salvation.

God provided the means of salvation and God elects for salvation.
