Is anything taken or done in excess gluttony or does gluttony only refer to food and drink?

It could be used for any excess. The two sins that Baptists are famous for ignoring are the two Big Gs, gluttony and gossip. The usual reference is to food. I have mentioned this before, but once I saw at a church pot luck a three hundred pound person, sitting at a table, with his plate full, mouth full, trying to talk about someone who was sinning in the church. This guy is a good multisinner.

Same here.... anything in excess, whether it's 200 pairs of shoes, or chocolate cake.

I agree that gluttony is a sin.

But you know what is interesting about the Bible and gluttony?

The Bible doesn't say much about it.

It is mentioned in Proverbs a few times.

The Pharisees called Jesus a drunkard and glutton because they observed the way he ate and drank. Obviously the Son of God did not eat or drink too much but he did it enough that Pharisees accused him of being these things. Pharisees still do this today. People who are fat or people who like to drink- Pharisees are still calling them drunkards and gluttons.

The point is this. Gluttony, though sin, is not as condemned as many other sins in Scripture; like self-righteousness for example.

Let's make a big deal out of that of which God makes a big deal. And let's not make a big deal out that which God does NOT make a big deal out of.

That's how I came to forsake modern pseudo-fundamentalism. I found myself preaching constantly against stuff the Bible mentions little or not at all and I also found myself preaching little on things the Bible talks of a GREAT DEAL.

The specifics of gluttony (any excess) is mentioned several times in Proverbs in relation to food. In one verse, it talks about people who are so lazy from overeating they will not even pick up their own fork. In the New Testement, the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and church dinners were being abused in relation to the Lord's Supper.

You might not consider it an important sin, and maybe it only harms those doing it. However, when at church, having a meal, is it appropriate to joke about stuffing your gut, having contests to see who can eat the most, etc....

So do you have any explanation for the other sin we constantly ignore, gossip? Is that way down at the bottom of your list also?

I just SAID it is mentioned a FEW TIMES IN PROVERBS.

    What are you rebutting???

But the point you ought to consider is that it is JUST mentioned a FEW TIMES in the WHOLE BIBLE and MOST of those are found in Proverbs which is not a book of precepts by which any person should judge what is always good and evil.

In other words, proverbs are generalities- not invincible truths. No responsible handler of the Scripture would use Proverbs alone to condemn ANYTHING- ANYTHING.

If the bulk of what you have to condemn something with is found in Proverbs, then you ought not condemn it very fiercely.

Use proverbs the way God intended for you to use it- as a colletion of wise sayings that ought to be followed in general- not as doctrines.

The only exception to this rule is when the proverb you use is supported by other Scriptures that are teaching invincible truths.

A proper understanding of how to interpret different genres of biblical literature is sorely absent from our religious culture today.

The gossip is more clearly condemned in Scripture. Occasional gorging of food is not sin in Scripture.

Gluttony, a heart problem, manifests itself in a lifestyle- not a single meal or feast.

No. It is way UP on the list- but it is because it is NOT my list, it is the BIBLE'S. There are things that the Bible HARDLY EVER addresses and there are things the Bible addresses CONSTANTLY.

We need to put the emphasis where GOD has put the emphasis and not major on the minors while minoring on the majors.

To me, gluttony, as well as other excesses could fall under covetousness.

Yes, sin is a real knee slapper. You really have no right to comment on anyone else's sin, as you seem so good at.

I responded to the wit. His post is obviously intended to be humorous, and succeeds.

Why have you gotten so bitter lately?

A glutton is lavish and voracious. Gluttony does not refer to excess per se as does drunkenness, it refers to an inordinate apetite. Overeating is definitely a form of gluttony, but so is refusing food (that God created to be received with thanksgiving) one is given simply because it wasn't prepared to his tastes.
