In a blog post about proper debate someone said:

"The difference between 'You are wrong' and 'I disagree with you' is the that first assumes that I must be right. The latter attitude may suggest that "I" may not have as yet taken I Cor 8:2 to heart. There is actually a rather delicate balance in here. I rather like G. K. Chesterton's take: "It is not bigotry to be certain we are right; but it is bigotry to be unable to imagine how we might possibly have gone wrong."

    What are your thoughts?

You are wrong shifts the topic to asserted flaws in the opponent, verses discussing why this view or that comes closest to the truth.

Also the ploy of saying "I do not understand" your statements are convoluted, etc is often used to evade truth.

The action always turns the discussion from the topic to some supposed character flaw or lack of qualification. The reason this behavior is systemic on the forum is that leadership allows threads to be derailed using these shuck and jive tactics.

Fundamentally most posters want to find fault with the views of others but avoid presenting their own views for discussion.

We could number the tactics, (1) feigning ignorance, (2) misrepresenting others and claiming it was innocent mistake, (3) saying an opponent is flawed, i.e closed minded or driven by hate, and so forth. None of this reflects love for one another, but rather the bully boy tactics of the playground.

When we say some view is flawed, wrong, mistaken or false, without providing specifics we are just presenting generalizations of "taint so" and adding nothing to the edification of others.

Well, I certainly like it better when someone says they disagree with me than telling me I am wrong.

    If it were only so nice. How about the persons who say things like;

    "You are ignorant"

    "You are a liar"

"No spiritual person agrees with you"

    "You are a heretic"

    "Your are spouting blasphemy"

"I will pray that you come to a knowledge of the truth"

"You are blind to the truth of scripture"

    "Sad, truly sad"

    "Your Momma wears Army boots"

    "Your feet stink"

I get these kinds of responses on a regular basis. Well, except for the one about my feet.

In that case, to paraphrase one of the insults above, you should say,
Verily, verily and behold, thou feet stinketh.

Telling another they are wrong requires a minimal amount of knowledge on the person making the statement, and in many cases, the knowledge is not there. Also, posts do not have to contain "you are wrong" or other such phrase to be condescending.

KJV guy? Oh, that's nothing, I am KJB ONLY. I am the scum of the earth.

I rather enjoy the insults, they are entertaining. I sincerely mean that. I must be stirring them up if they have to insult me.

    Yep!

Me too brother...me too! I thought you knew I was an ONLY too! Me and Roby had a nice go-round about it just a few weeks ago down in the translations forum. I'm sure we both would say we won. In my opinion though, that debate is just about as polarized as the abortion debate ever was. It is very rare that anyone ever changes their mind on topics like these unless God moves in and opens their eyes about it. There is a lot of PRIDE driving the proponents of many issues like these ON BOTH SIDES OF THE FENCE. I hate to compare those two particular issues with each other and I'm NOT REALLY.....but they are two of the more prominent issues under discussion in public circles these days that have significant spiritual implications ( and they are the ones that came to mind as I'm writing this).
As for debate in general, I think it is a useful tool for airing out differences and bringing all sides of an issue out into the light for folks to decide about. It does take a LOT of grace to debate issues that people feel strongly about. I'm pretty sure that is not my calling.

    You too? Hallelujah!

Oh, on occasion I make the error of debating the issue, which is impossible, because I do not believe based on scholarly proof (actually, none of the scholars can or will ever agree). Scholars cannot get past this, they demand the impossible.

I simply believe the many verses that God will preserve his infallible and perfect word. When I look at all the versions, the KJB is the only version I can believe is this preserved scripture. Can I prove it? NOPE. I believe it by faith. Scholars don't understand faith.

I'm surprised this has not turned into a Calvinist thread by now. There's far more name-calling on those threads than in the KJVO threads, IMO.

Saying "I disagree" rather than "you're wrong" is giving a measure of respect to the one with whom you disagree. It a "soft answer" which turns away wrath.

It is a way to disagree without being disagreeable.

But what if God, in the "council halls of eternity past," predestinated us to be disagreeable?!!?

Aren't we all "predestinated" to be disagreeable? How many "agreeable" two year olds have you ever seen? Isn't NO! their favorite word? :BangHead:

Sure, many mellow out. That is until the teenaged years arrive for an encore performance. :BangHead:

Eve predestinated that for us when she bit the apple. ;)

I knew Chesterton was a bright fellow. I think he is 'right-on' with this statement.

After I left home at age 18 in 1964 to join the USAF (It'll be 48 yrs ago next Friday BTW!!), it was amazing how smart my late mother (who died at age 90 in 2003 (and probably also my late father who died at age 56 in July, 1963) all the sudden became!!!
