Luke's new endeavor to hallow his belly has prompted me to continue his old thread.

Old news AND incomplete. We read similar studies when I was in college (years and years ago). Moderate use of alcohol stimulates the production of High Density Lipoproteins, which serve as a chelation catalyst to clean out the arteries.

HOWEVER . . . alcohol in any amount increases one's chances for cancer.

Thought I would take this opportunity to voice my opinion on this matter.

    1. The Bible tells us that drunkenness is a sin!

    Galatians 5:18-26
    18. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
    19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
    20. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
    21. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
    22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
    23. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
    24. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
    25. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
    26. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

In fact drunkenness is listed among the most grievous sins. Other grievous sins mentioned are strife [contention or contentious] and seditions [division or dissension]. I don't see abstinence or preaching abstinence as it relates to alcohol mentioned as a grievous sin. In fact I don't believe such is mentioned anywhere in Scripture as just a little sin. Temperance or self-control is commended.

    2. I am not a teetotaler but if my consumption of the spirits were emulated people would have to start making their own.

    3. I believe that Jesus Christ turned the water into wine, and a good wine at that. I don't believe that the modest consumption of alcohol is a sin.

    4. I do believe that it is not wise to accuse people who do believe in abstinence of committing a sin. Furthermore, I do not believe that preaching abstinence is a sin if it is done in a Biblical manner.

    5. Brother Jeff [Old Union Brother] has started an appropriate discussion on this subject of liberty in Jesus Christ. It has received little attention, perhaps because he does present the Biblical basis for his opinion. And defending your viewpoint from Scripture is always more difficult than simply expressing your bias.

I agree with everything you've written here, but may take issue with the one comment, "I do not believe that preaching abstinence is a sin if it is done in a Biblical manner.'' But I'm not sure what you mean by this, as you yourself said, "I don't believe that the modest consumption of alcohol is a sin." If you don't believe a modest consumption of alcohol is sinful, then obviously a preacher who believes it is sinful not to abstain wouldn't being preaching in a "biblical manner." But maybe you just mean that a preacher can encourage abstinence without condemning moderation? If so, I completely agree.

And one year they conclude eggs are bad for you and the next they conclude they are good for you.

I know you are merely responding to Luke's assertions regarding the health benefits, but as I've argued that is really beside the point regarding the permissibility to consume alcohol; and the dangers of using the bible to shame people into abstaining by preaching any consumption is sinful.

That is the reason I commended the thread by Old Union Brother. If this subject is to be discussed it should be discussed from a Biblical viewpoint rather than news items!
