Let's say that Romney DID ask for 10 years worth of tax returns. Maybe it was a test to see how the candidate would respond to that question.

In each year during the entire 20-year period, the Romneys owed both state and federal income taxes.

Over the entire 20-year period, the average annual effective federal tax rate was 20.20%.

Over the entire 20-year period, the lowest annual effective federal personal tax rate was 13.66%.

Over the entire 20-year period, the Romneys gave to charity an average of 13.45% of their adjusted gross income.

Over the entire 20-year period, the total federal and state taxes owed plus the total charitable donations deducted represented 38.49% of total AGI.

The issue of taxes does not help establish the differences between the two candidates. Obviously, the Democrats want the issue to go on and on. Time is ticking away towards election day, and the more time spent talking about taxes, birth certificates, and other such nonsense, the less time Romney has to paint a picture of why he should be President and not Obama.

Obama wants to keep our attention on issues that do not effect our nation, because his record being discussed only harms his reelection chances. It might be a question if Carter or Obama's record was worse, but neither deserved reelection. The difference is that Reagan was able to show the American public what Carter had done for four years. Romney has got to get in gear, and soon.

His campaign also announced that from 1990 through 2009, Romney paid an average annual effective federal tax rate of 20.2 percent.

In 2011, the couple donated 30 percent of their income - more than $4 million - to charity.
