We have had a lot of discussion about remarriage after divorce, but what if the marriage is annulled by a judge as not having been valid? Can a person remarry then?

I don't see how an annulment is different than divorce.

They were married before they weren't.

In an annulment, the people were never really married in the first place.

Ironically most annulments I've seen happen after people have this (relatively) big ceremony where friends and family get together...there's usually a minister or official who says some words...a ring or two is put on a finger...you know nothing like an actual ceremony or anything...

Since the judge has no binding authority from God to declare who is married...

...If the couple were of consenting age and made a covenant before God and men to marry, then have it annulled for no good reason...then biblically either is commiting adultery if they go get married again.

...I would say even if the couple were drunk and got married in Las Vegas, then sobered up and regretted it...the God-honoring thing to do would be to commit to a life together...especially if they consumated the marraige...If they just drove through and got the piece of paper...there may be room to say it was just a joke.

What if the "minister or official" is really an imposter with no authority to conduct a wedding? You can have as much ceremony and commitment as you want but without lawful authority the people aren't really married.

    Question for you...

My wife and I found out (a week later) that our minister forgot to sign and turn in the marraige license untill a day or two after our wedding...SO...Was I married the first night of our Honeymoon...or Not until later when it was "legal."?

So would you say if a young couple has a wedding ceremony, vows to spend their lives together before God, Goes home and consumates the marraige...but then finds out that their minister was not ordained or licenced, and the state did not accept his signature on the marraige license...that this couple would then be biblically, before God, free to separate and marry again?

We actually had a couple call us as we were driving home from the reception. She wanted to be sure that the license had been signed and everything was all set. We laughed and just said "Have a wonderful honeymoon!"

I believe if they were not legally married, they still stood before God and promised a covenant to each other. My recommendation would be to get a justice of the peace to make it legal but that they did all within their power to be properly married.

    I don't believe in annullment.

Annullment is divorce by another name.

Let's say Bob is married to Cindy and he leaves her and starts another life without divorcing Cindy and marries Janice. Janice eventually finds out and she leaves Bob and gets an annulment from a judge because her marriage is invalid because Bob is still married to Cindy. Is Janice free to marry someone else?

You know when you start stretching for exceptions you generally have violated the premise of your question.

Sounds like someone's getting ready to rationalize.

I'm asking a straightforward question based on an annulment scenario. Do you have anything substantive to add?

Are you? Do you believe that when Christ said that a man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery, He didn't mean what He said?

(I did not mean to add the 'thumbs down'. Don't know how to get rid of it.)

Well thanks for dismissing what we've said. Like I said before, every annulment follows a wedding ceremony of some kind.

If you don't get to know your officiant you've still had a wedding ceremony. As far as I'm concerned, and frankly as far as the Bible is concerned, marriage is a sacred estate that is offered to believers as a sign of God's ultimate promise.

Annulments are a form of divorce. (please note the period)

Your examples still have a wedding ceremony. I don't understand how this is complicated.

Here is an link for annulment - its a good read.

One example brought up would be if a person was married under duress - that would qualify for annulment. In that case would you considered that person unfit for (re-)marriage?

I don't think some cases of divorce automatically prohibit remarriage so certainly duress would qualify.
