I think some of the things being said about Muslim immigrants were once said about Catholics.

    Anyone else see parallels?

"When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not care to support it, so that its professors are obliged to call for the help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one."

Yes, it is hard to forget the Catholics blowing up bombs throughout us cities. Killing school children by the hundreds. And murdering shoppers in the dozens throughout shopping malls.

It is hard to forget all of the decapitions of innocent people at the hands of the Catholics.

And then of course there was the demands from the Catholic immigrants demanding religious accomodations like Catholic mass chapels in airports and baptismal fonts on college campuses.

And there was the demands for fish only lunches on Fridays in the public schools and jails.

    The parallel is uncanny.

Old Regular, you seem to be missing the point of the OP.

The topic here is about the current attitude in the U.S. towards Muslim immigrants.

The suggestion is that the U.S. population held the same beliefs about Catholic immigrants in the past that are now held about today's Muslim immigrants.

Your post is pretty out in left field as far as the OP topic goes.

My post was more a response to you than to the OP. I don't believe that Muslim immigrants are guilty of the following presented in your post other than demanding facilities for washing feet. So I guess it is fair to say your post is also not responsive to the OP.

    Really?

Muslims in 2012 are not exploding bombs in public places around the world?

Muslims in 2012 are not killing American citizens posted at U.S. embassies and dragging their dead bodies through the streets in celebration?

Muslims in 2012 are not demanding (and getting) Muslim meals at Gitmo and in U.S. prisons?

You need to start following the news a little more closely.

The PSA (Polish Space Agency) is sending a man to the sun, and he is taking off at night so he does not get burnt.

You must make up your mind! Are you talking about Muslim immigrants in this country or Muslims outside the country. My initial post was contrasting the history of Roman Catholicism with Islam, not immigrants to this country. You took exception to that post:

    So at least be consistent!

My point was that every new ethnic group to the US has started at the bottom and been hated by previous immigrant groups.

How can anyone argue that the things said about Muslim immigrants in this day are about the same as what was said about Catholic immigrants, long ago.

    - Our Protestant culture will be diluted.

    - They come not because they share our values, but because of economic hard times.

    - They want to subvert us. You know, the Pope hates that new, secular land of religious freedom.

Heck, in the 1930's, the Pope issued a statement saying the heirarchical nature of fascism accurately reflects the natural order of things.

Is Catholicism not rather absolutist? Author and geography professor, Stephen Mumford, wrote in the 1980's, that Catholicism and Marxism hated each other so, because both were absolutist, and that this led Catholic American leaders to drag the US into Vietnam (But, that's another thread.)

Have Catholics changed America? Here is one way they have: "Father of the Constitution" James Madison, wrote that no taxpayer money should be spent on Congressional chaplains. Today, $170,000 of taxpayer money is given to the House Chaplain, a Jesuit priest. Presumably he gives this to his order. For going on 12 years the House Chaplain has been a Catholic priest. Nancy Pelosi and Boehner are Roman Catholic. Who remembers or cares what "The Father of the Constitution" wrote?

During the 1950's, "Americans United for Separation of Church and State" was a largely Baptist affair. They and many Americans saw Catholicism as being separatist, creating its own school system, and wanting the taxpayer to fund it. "Parochaid" they called it. Today, its called "vouchers" or "charter schools" and is happening. A lot of money was spent bringing about this change in thinking of Americans, and yes, Catholicism did subvert an American way.

But, I don't mean to use this thread to bash Catholicism. I just see folks worrying about Muslims in similar fashion, and at times, in a paranoid way. Even if large-scale Muslim immigration to the USA is to be avoided, don't ya think Muslims have the paranoids among us all worked up? I smell xenophobia. I smell bigotry. That I say this means, to the paranoids, that I am a baddie. "You're either with us or agin us." I once heard a Klansman say. Well, I'm not with those who stereotype and hate. Or, are just suffering from paranoia.

Overall, I think Muslims less a worry than Catholicism has been. For one, it has no central leadership.
Yup, them Catholics, er Muslims, are acoming and have a hidden agenda. :)

As in many things, there is some truth to even things that are mostly nonsense.

I disagree. I believe Islam is a far greater danger than Roman Catholicism. The purpose of Radical Islam is to establish a central leadership, the Caliphate. Furthermore, their demands in this country are being met while Christians are being discriminated against. Sharia law has been recognized by some judges. The amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution forbidding the use of Sharia law in state courts has been put on hold by a Federal judge. Foot washing stations are being built on some college campuses to accommodate these people while the mention of Jesus Christ may bring down the wrath of a Federal judge.

Would we need anti-Sharia laws if separation of church and state were "total" as James Madison wrote had been good for "the piety of the priesthood and the devotion of the people" in a letter to a friend?

    No.
