I've seen a lot of harsh words about Mormons on this board, especially since Romney emerged as the Republican front runner in this cycle. I'm not condemning what anyone else has said, that's not my purpose here. I just want to share my own experiences and perspective about the Mormons, which I suspect are different from anyone else here.
My father was raised Mormon, and then converted to Lutheranism when he married my mother. Thus half of my closest family members as a child and young adult were Mormons, but I was not a Mormon myself. This allowed me to have an unusually close window into the Mormon church without being indoctrinated in any of their teachings.
Yes, some of the Mormon doctrine is profoundly messed up. But I want to tell you all that in all my life, I have never known any people who were more Christlike in their daily walk than my grandparents and the two aunts I knew well. My uncles (by marriage) were less so, and one uncle in particular, who was a high ranking lay person in the Mormon church, tended to be somewhat self-righteous about the church. But I will go to my grave believing that my grandparents and aunts were genuine Christians, if being a Christian is defined as loving Jesus Christ and accepting His sacrifice for our sins. Whatever else they believed, they were clear that they believed that, and they proved it by living it. I know now that they must have been very disappointed by my father's defection from their church, but never once while I was growing up did they ever act like it made a difference in how they loved him, or me and my two siblings. We were full members of the family in every way, and they were some of my best role models of how to be a loving and caring and generous person to everyone else in my life.
I guess my point is that despite what the details of a church's doctrines may be and how unbiblical they are, whether we're talking about Mormons or Roman Catholics or whatever, if Jesus Christ is in there, He is able to find those whose hearts truly seek God. The Gospel is far more powerful than any erroneous doctrines that might accompany it. It can reach anyone in any church. So I think we should be slow to designate members of any church as 'evil' or as worshiping 'false gods.' God both touches and judges individual hearts, not churches. My own experiences leave me no doubt that while Mormon doctrine is not strictly Christian, individual Mormons can be genuine Christians. None of us know that Mitt Romney is not one, and he should get the benefit of the doubt.

Mormonism is based in untruth. And people can genuinely believe the untruth. The Pharisees also lived religious lives.

Mormons are worshiping their version of Jesus, not the Jesus of the Bible. As cruel as it may sound, no one gets adopted into God's family by his own deeds.

Anyone who is not worshiping the Jesus of the Holy Bible as He says He is would be worshiping a false god, and that's simply what Mormons do. There is no difference between their false god, or that of the Muslims, or the Hindus, etc.

Worshiping any of them leads to death and eternal separation from Christ.

Walguy, don't you believe if a Morman was genuinely saved he/she would come out of a false belief in his/her God? I agree Mormons can be some of the most godly people but that doesn't mean they know the real Jesus. We don't need to be hateful towards Mormons but we do need to tell them the truth and if that means calling their faith false then we must do so but in a gentle way that wins them.

Agreed. And this is yet something else that I feared would take place. We must not shrink back in declaring Mormonism to be what it is. definitely in the love of Christ. But no one gets saved worshiping a false god.

Walguy, thanks for posting. That was a blessing and I agree with what you said.

As far as not coming "out of the church" sometimes people are called to stay in the church, be it Catholic or whatever, so that their light can shine where they are.

I, too, have relatives who are Mormon. And I have Catholic friends who I know love Jesus and never left Catholicism.

Sometimes Baptists are too judgmental. I am learning not to be such a Pharisee. (raised as a "fundy").....

I often like to ask Protestants a very simple question: do Jews worship the same God you worship? After all, they claim the Messiah has not come and that there couldn't be a "God the Son" because, to them, this notion violates Deuteronomy 6:4. They do not worship the Jesus of the Bible, so according to your second to last paragraph they worship a false god.

Do you agree with that statement? Do Jews worship a false god?

Walguy, I hear what you say. I believe that there will be many people in Heaven that we did not expect to be there because of doctrinal differences.

In the words of Mr Owl..."Lets find out!". 1 John 2:23 Whoever denies the Son has not the Father either; he who confesses the Son has the Father also.
John 5:23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Good is good and evil is evil. Intent counts. results count. Maybe they count in different ways. Some times an evil intent turns out good or a good intent turns out evil. How do you all judge?

Mormons are NOT Satan. If a Mormon intends to good and it turns out good then double good for him.

No they do not worship the same God. Jews who reject Christ meet the same eternity that others who reject Christ meet.

They reject the One who saves.

So yes. The Jews worship a false god. But there are Messianic Jews.

There is a verse someplace where God (?) says something like "You meant it for evil, I meant it for good."

I don't believe Mormons are Christian.

But I also don't think many in the rank and file know it. They really believe they are.

Many of them know almost nothing about the inner and secret doctrine of their sect.

When they mention Jesus, one has to wonder which one they are talking about, our crucified Lord or the brother of Satan.
