if the message of the Lord is clearer in the Modern versions, why continue to study from the KJV IF you cannot fully understand the old "kings English?"

if you are able to read and understand the older nersion of english, that is fine, but do most people today still read with understanding it?

Though it took me many years, and though I still love the KJV, I have to agree that a MV is easier to understand, thus, kicking and fighting (LOL) I moved to the NKJV.

After many years I have moved from the King James Version to the Holman Christian Standard Bible.

I use the new versions. I especially like the HCSB and the ESV. But I will never throw away my KJV. That is the version that God used to bring me to Christ. That is the version that I memorized after I got saved, and I can quote many scriptures from it to witness without even having a bible. That is the version that waxes so poetic in places that the modern versions can never approach. Isaiah 53 still brings tears to my eyes when I read it, as do some of the Psalms. I don't look at any version of God's word with disdain, but the KJV will always have a special place in my heart.

I prefer to read the KJV in the poetry parts of OT, but do think that for most readers of the bible who never grew up on it, better to read a modern version!

If I did not grow up on the KJV, I probably would not use it as much, I agree. I probably would use the HCSB or ESV more, if not the NKJV.

I really WANT to love the KJV. I was not brought up with it. Every time I read it, I come away without understanding. Then, I pick up almost anything else, and gain understanding. It is very frustrating to me.

I once sat on a bench, waiting to go into a meeting, and also waiting was one of the Missionaries our church supported. He asked me what translation I had, and I told him the NASB. I added that I was able to understand it far more easily than the KJV. He looked at me, and said, Van it is really important to use a Bible you can understand.

I did not think much about that casual comment, until years later when I learned he had spend his life in Africa, translating the Bible into one of the native languages. "Van, it is really important to use a Bible you can understand."

I didn't 'kick and fight' quite as much - but other than that your post perfectly expresses my own experience.

About once a week I force myself to read from the KJV. I cannot argue with those who appreciate the language but I also cannot argue with those who say that the MVs are easier to understand. My study time is limited these days and I cannot spend too much time trying to get vocabulary word meaning when the NAS or NKJV is right at my fingertips.
