Religious Conservatives Dealt Fatal Blow this Year

This election proved once and for all that the Democrats don't need the Catholic vote to win, and it proved that evangelicals aren't enough to hand victory to the Republicans.

As an electoral force, the Catholic Church is dead as a door nail. The American bishops. too lazy or too cowardly to actually preach their own doctrines for the past 40 years, now face a situation in which Catholic voters are now indistinguishable from the population at large, and thus are irrelevant as any sort of a unified voting block. The rank and file Catholics can't even agree on the abortion issue. Thank the bishops. If there was a religious version of breach of fiduciary responsibility, the bishops would be guilty of it.

Conservative evangelicals, on the other hand, have become little more than a niche interest group within the GOP. This is the group that gives rise to people like Todd Akin, and who are far more of a liability for the party when it comes to appealing to urban and educated people, which is a huge part of the voting population.

In order to actually hope to win any national elections, the GOP or its successor party will need to flee from the religious conservatives. The new coalition will have to appeal to young Ron Paul people, to gays, to Hispanics, and to other anti-drug war libertarian types.

GOP in Deep Trouble, Ron Paul Looking Good

Romney lost today to a guy who is overseeing a horrible economy, prosecuting unpopular wars, and who can barely string 5 words together without a teleprompter. This was the best the Republican Party can do. Not only are the Republicans evil, they're evil and contemptible losers, which is far worse.

The biggest losers tonight are of course people who value peace and freedom, but we would have also lost if Romney won. The GOP is right up there in the loser category, however. The GOP lost seats in the Senate, and did little to improve its position in the House. It has served up two ridiculously bad nominees in a row, claiming "electability" and then going down in flames.

The Ron Paul movement is a big winner here. The GOP told the libertarians in the party to get lost, and the GOP paid for it. Interestingly, both Iowa and Nevada, where Ron Paul supporters gained control of the state party, both went to Obama after the Romney campaign actively fought to disenfranchise Ron Paul supporters. I guess the GOP got what it wanted there.

I don't know what Ron Paul people did during the election but I saw how we were treated by republicans when we tried to work through that party.

Republicans weren't interested in protecting our liberties, a sane foreign policy or sound money. Turns out they were only interested in the same thing as the democrats. Gaining an advantage over the other party so they could reap the benefits of sleeping with the special interests.

Socialism doesn't work maybe we have to find that out as a nation before any real change can take place. We're about to enter a dark place. Maybe we'll come out the other side a little wiser. I hope so.

Things are already looking up for the libertarian party. :thumbs:
