To Secede, or Not to Secede? The Poll...

You pegged it- it is a "hot nutton" issue because "nutton" is going to happen!

 

What states are throwing out overtures? Personally if California wants to leave I'd let them go...TODAY!

 

Here in Florida we tried that once.... it didn't work out.

 

Why not just start a war to put an end to the evils of the other side? That's what the north did, and won! Unless you think the war was really about the right to secede.

 

The north was on the right side of the slavery issue, but the south was right in their right to secede. Secession is what started the war.

 

Gotta remember that everyone involved in a large event may has their own reason for participating. The politicians who lead their states into that civil war likely had very different reasons - probably related to holding power - than the citizens did, which could have been any number of things. Sometimes our reason for doing something is as important as what we are doing.

If my home state ( Texas ) were voting to secede, I'd have to weigh the reasons very carefully. I don't support the idea in general, but I get why it's on the table again. Would we be better off separating? A quick review of a couple of the first few federalist papers reasons well against dividing in such a manner. I would much rather see my home state and others simply refuse to play ball with Uncle Sam when appropriate rather than completely secede from the union.

 

That sure was a lot of killing to defend an amoral thing like the right to secede. Slavery was the moral motive, secession the legal.

 

Uncle Sam has way more power than the constitution originally granted him. Look at Obamacare for goodness' sake, and the Supreme Court agrees that Sam should have that power to force states to go along. The question is whether savage civil war would result from a constitutional challenge to the denial of a state's right to secede in today's cultured society. I tend to think that the armed services are heavily lopsided with southerners and would not stand to see their brothers slaughtered. Historically wars decide territorial boundaries. In this case it could end up a bloodless dissolution of the union with massive financial, agricultural distribution, and economic collapse. The south would be better prepared to endure it with basic ag infrastructure and also its tighter knit associational cultural fabric.
