Get your Twinkies and your Wonder Bread now, because what you see in stores is the last of them. (At least until the brands are sold at auction and revived.) Hostess Brands has announced that it will liquidate, blaming a strike by workers in one of its unions as they rejected a contract that called for them to make major concessions on wages and benefits. The workers had taken concessions to help the company survive a previous bankruptcy, and this time around when the call for cuts came, members of the Teamsters narrowly accepted them while members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers union overwhelmingly said no and went on strike. According to the company , it's all the workers' fault:
"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said CEO Gregory Rayburn in a statement.
Of course, Hostess management had already claimed that the strike would be responsible for the closings of specific plants—when

it had already planned to close plants even if the workers accepted the cuts and stayed at work. BCTGM President Frank Hurt says the workers understood who they were dealing with:

Our members know that the plans all along of the Wall Street investors currently in control of this company did not include the operation of Hostess Brands any longer than it takes to sell the company in whole—or in part—in a way that will maximize the profits of these vulture capitalists regardless of the impact on the workforce.
Workers were being asked to accept cuts, but top executives had gotten massive raises as Hostess was about to enter bankruptcy. Investments in the company's future that had been promised as part of restructuring after the previous bankruptcy were never made. And as for the management, put in place by the private equity companies that now own Hostess, Hurt says:

Unfortunately however, for the past eight years management of the company has been in the hands of Wall Street investors, "restructuring experts", third-tier managers from other non-baking food companies and currently a "liquidation specialist". Six CEO’s in eight years, none of whom with any bread and cake baking industry experience, was the prescription for failure.

This is a Mitt Romney-style deal . Throughout the campaign, we read about Romney's past deals that went very much like what's happening to Hostess. Now we're watching it in real time—and seeing how when workers fight back, they're targeted for blame.

Why is everyone so concerned about this? We all know that Obama will have every one of them in a new job in the next mont or two.

18,000 workers out of a job. The CEO said there's a good market but Mr Twinky wasn't making a profit. Maybe they can fill out an online app for PetsMart, like I did tonight - 8 pages longs when it came to the psych test and I was applying for a position to clean animal cages.

And all those who did not take the mark of the beast could not buy or sell

Is that why Paul the apostle said if we have but food and clothes (I take his meaning to mean homeless) we are to be content?

    Worker's fight back........

Union workers should have fought back years ago at the corruption of union leaders who have helped put the economy into the plight it now suffers. Regardless of how much you try to blame Romney, big business, and such, the unions have their own share of the blame.

What are the salaries of union leaders? What perks do they have that the rank and file workers don't share? Who's near the top of the most frequent visitor's list to the Oval office over the last four years?

IMO, the unions have become a major part of this "entitled" society. And now we are seeing some of the consequences.

Relief workers turned away from giving aid to Sandy victims because they don't hold union cards. That fact alone is enough to prompt me to make this reply to your post.

Unions have a material share in the blame.

Union workers have a major share in the blame when they refuse to work to put food on their tables. Now, they are going to get into the "entitled" lines for government handouts. After reaping years and years of higher pay and benefits, while supporting corruption within their own ranks.

Where in the scriptures does it say that people don't have to earn a living by the sweat of their brow, if an employer doesn't pay union scale wages?

Or they can move to a "right to work state" like Tennessee and get a low paying job through a temp agency like millions of others have. After all we all have an inalienable right to work for peanuts now that the unions have been replaced by the temp agencies.

Same game but the corporations get to keep a much bigger share of the wealth now and they ain't about to share it with the peons.

Yes, they have that right, and to some people, it is better than no job at all. By the way, would you plesase tell us why the international banking consortium decided twinkies had to go.

The world of junk food is changing. Twinkies and wonderbread should have changed their receipes, to get the quasi-healthfood crowd. I remember devouring Twinkies, knowing they were grossly unhealthy. A lot of Coke is still consumed by the masses. When I quit soft drinks I lost 20 pounds. That is a big league no-no to demean such a reputable bastion of American enterprise.

A workman is worthy of his hire. Henry Ford started without a union. The workers had to organize--not without blood letting. A union contract is not an agreement among gentlemen. Curiously: there are pilots unions, teachers unions, flight controllers, and govt. workers unions. Why are such things necessary? Sometimes solidarity can trump exploitation. Having seen the sweat shops of blue jeans and dress shirts overseas, I can say that the merchants of Venice are interested only in their bottom line. The same could be said for the stockholders.

Curious: some bankrupt companies survive when the workers buy them and run them themselves--without 64 tiers of management and chief executives.

The ones with the gold still run the show.

How much is your wallet inflated?

Unions are not the problem, but they are usually the scapegoat.

    Peace,

    Bro. James

No one who thinks a unon employee should take an 8% pay cut and a 15% benefits cut to save his job would reject an 8% tax increase and a 15% Medicare increase to save the USA, right?

Or they can move to Mexico and pay $4/hour and zero benefits. Twinkies have a much longer shelf life than roses or onions.

Because they could make much more money by following the Romney business plan:

    1. Get control of the company.

    2. Borrow cash against the company assets to max.

    3. File for bankrupcy and pass the loss on to the working class tax payers.

Last night on Coast Alex Jones said that the one world government has won the war and is now ruling the US. I knew that 10 years ago.

It was either that or they close the doors and no one works. Which is better?
