IMO, JFK had more courage than many folks, a rare breed of man, willing to back what he spoke and, I admire that he tried to warn the public but was assassinated shortly thereafter, after he shared the following:

"The very word "'secrecy'" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know." - John F. Kennedy, New York City, April 27, 1961

What caught my eye just now was this:

"And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment."

    Any comments on JFK's statement?

He was the best public speaking president in my lifetime. No one has come close to being able to deliver a speech as well as JFK. At that time I was not a big JFK supporter.

I fear we have censorship these days, from the government and especially from large corporations who would pull their advertising dollars if newscasts reported what they did not want told to the public.

I have wondered since 1973 with the overthrow of Allende in Chile who is it that controls the press here. I still do not have an answer.

That summer I was in Brazil. The news was full of reports of the unrest in Chile and it was obvious that Allende's days were numbered. I was very interested in following this story. When I returned to the States, after about ten days in Brazil, there was total silence on what was happening in Chile. When Allende was overthrown and killed the government, the State Dept., the news corporation and services expressed great shock and surprise. I remember hearing, "We had no idea, no inkling this was gong to happen."

I knew this could not be true and have wondered since, who killed this story of events leading up to the overthrow of Allende and Chile's entrance into the dark days of dictatorship by Pinochet.

Would we have known more if JFK had been in office? I do not know. No one can say for sure on this.

Is this the same JFK that used secrecy (not to mention, the Mafia) to try and kill Castro? :tongue3:

One and the same! And then there were his secret extramarital escapades, not to mention the illnesses that supposedly plagued him.

    For our ESL members

    >It got him killed, as Obama soon realized.

Referring to JFK's rebellion against his handlers by proposing to get out if Vietnam and considering the elimination of the Federal Reserve System. Obama soon discovered that he bit off more than he wanted to chew.

Obama is a good rabble rouser but that is it. Of course for the leftists/democrats that is sufficient.
