First, my heartfelt prayers go out for comfort and strength for all those hurt by the insane act of that heartless cowardly attention grabbing immoral animal. There is no punishment we could administer on this earth that would ever come close to give justice for his crimes against humanity, but I trust he is in the right hands now to begin receiving it.

Now, as per our President’s response:

"As a country we have been through this too many times. Whether it's an elementary school in Newt-Newton, a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago, these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods and these children are our children. And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics."

I whole-heartedly agree that "meaningful action" should take place...

But, it seems Obama is about to try to take advantage of the recent tragedy to further his agenda to take away our guns. This is not an option Mr. President! I have long said that the only way to prevent these kinds of tragedies at our schools is to have metal detectors at gated entrances which are protected by armed guard. I believe it may have to come to that. It seems to me this way to “take meaningful action” would be more practical because of being more amicably received so why not use this to counter anti-gun agendas and arguments?

Any other suggestions on how to take meaningful action that don’t include taking away everyone’s guns?

Agreed. Gun legislation will not stop these attacks. Increased security will in most cases.

Most criminals are lazy, in a manner of speaking. Leave something in your yard and it's as good as gone. Put it behind a fence and it's less likely to walk away. Put inside a building and the risk drops even less. Lock the doors and the risks drop more. The likelihood of a criminal meeting armed resistance makes the chance of that house being robbed almost nil. In most cases the unlocked car will be robbed and the locked car will be passed by. There's not a lot you can do in these cases except limit the damage. That means being able to fight back for yourself and the people around you.

There are exceptions. One is when a criminal has a specific goal or target in mind. If the target is a person the criminal will choose the time and place that is the easiest for him to attack. If the goal is a specific object the same is likely true. Of course, all bets are off when a desperate person, or a spur of the moment situation arises.

As to school security, I homeschool. I don't have a dog in that fight. I will say having a couple of armed guards and other staff on patrol would be preferable to me than metal detectors. As well as allowing teachings to carry concealed weapons.

All that said, some deeper things must be considered. When I was in high school there were always guns there, especially during hunting season. My senior year, IIRC, they started asking us to park off campus during hunting season. Still, we never had these attacks. We might have a couple guys pair off for a fight, or maybe a few guys brawl, until it got broken up but that usually settled things. I blame a society that has taken the teeth out of home, and school, discipline.

Yep. The Israelite's are much better at security than us.

Neh 4:16 From that day on, half of my servants carried on the work while half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows and the breastplates; and the captains were behind the whole house of Judah.
Neh 4:17 Those who were rebuilding the wall and those who carried burdens took their load with one hand doing the work and the other holding a weapon.
Neh 4:18 As for the builders, each wore his sword girded at his side as he built, while the trumpeter stood near me. (NASB)

Do the Israelite's then have similar rights for all responsible people as us to bear arms?

If I remember correctly its not a right. It is a requirement.

I know school districts all over the US are evaluating their emergency plans. Many of our schools have really open floor plans, and no real classrooms. That makes them hard to secure once a threat is inside.

Ain't nothing gonna stop it. There will, until Jesus fixes it, ALWAYS be a way to exact this sort of terror and there is essentially nothing man can do to stop it.

Turning to God would slow it. But this world doesn't want God.

There will always be another way.
    School buses.
    Subways.
    Football games.
    Malls.
    Packed restaurants.
    Movies.
    Grocery Stores.
    Playgrounds.
    Sidewalks.
    Theme Parks.
    Proms.
    Boy Scout meetings.
    Church.

Evil will strike and as the love of many continues to grow colder, they will continue to do the unthinkable in those places we used to think were safe.

12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. Matthew 24:12

None of us have any method for trusting such a thing. I pray that the young man knew Christ, not that our prayers either way matter at this point.

The President is but a pawn right now. All one has to do is look who is leading the charge against the guns: Bloomberg and big money.

The folks with the real money have a reason for wanting an unarmed electorate. The unarmed are more easily overrun by a one world government spurred on by big business interests.

Oh yes, on the subject of stopping evil, you would be the first one I could come to for advice.

I know exactly what I said, but I'm sure you've interpreted it to mean what you THINK I said.

The only way to trust that he is in the right hands to begin receiving justice for his crimes is to assume that he wasn't saved and is now receiving the judgment of hell for all of his sins instead of standing JUSTIFIED in God's presence.

We know of one act from that obviously broken child. And that one act could no more rip him from God's hand if he were saved than could committing idolatry by supporting that which is against HIM rip the many on this board from His hand.

It just never sounds like a good thing when we talk and sound like we want/or are happy about someone being in hell.

We don't have a method to trust that God is dealing justly with this young man? I think we do.

I've noticed a few things the media isn't talking about.

Conn already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

    http://www.bradycampaign.org/stategunlaws/scorecard/CT

It's already illegal to have a gun on school property. That didn't stop the shooter. It made it easier for him as no one was able to defend themselves and the children.

It's already illegal for a 20 year old to own a handgun. That didn't stop the shooter.

It's already illegal for anyone in Conn to carry a loaded handgun without a permit. That didn't stop the shooters.

It's already illegal to steal guns. That didn't stop the shooter.

It's already illegal to murder people. That didn't stop the shooter.

Instead of disarming law abiding citizens and making us all targets for crazies and murderers we need to make it easier for citizens to defend themselves and their children. I'm for training and arming enough teachers in every school so they can immediately respond to this kind of threat and have the option to use deadly force if necessary. A well trained and armed rapid response team inside every school made up of faculty members would save more lives than waiting on the police to arrive on the scene or believing in some fantasy that criminals and crazies are going to abide by stricter gun laws.

Excellent point. Those laws did nothing except disarm those who could have protected the children.
Yep, so the obvious answer (for a brain dead politician) is to take more guns away from law abiding citizens.
Well, yes and no. You must be 21 to buy a handgun but you can receive one as a gift if you are over 18, but your point is still a good one. Had he not stolen the guns from his parents, which is, of course, a crime, this would not have happened. But that law against stealing didn't help much either, did it? :)
Yep. Another stupid law which the criminals ignore and only serves to disarm the law abiding citizen and make the children vulnerable.
    Yep.
    Nope.
And if the teachers don't want to be armed, put well trained, armed security officers in the schools. Just about every bank has armed security officers during peak business hours. Do we value our money more than we value our children?

My last regular job was as a security guard. I was licensed to carry. Whether or not I carried was based on the desires of the client. One regular gig I had was on the campus of a local Roman Catholic college. The contract was amended when a few nuns complained, and would not change their mind. Having an armed guard force was made a low priority. They only approved one guard per shift, and they disarmed him.

People in authority have a responsibility to provide for the safety of their charges.

Another thing the media fails to report is whether or not these shooters have been on prescription medications that have been linked to violent and suicidal tendencies.

If it get reported at all it's usually treated as a side note.

CLICK HERE for a number of studies that have linked anti depressants and anti anxiety drugs with violent and suicidal tendencies.

    Here's one example.

    Drug Study, September 01, 2006

    United Kingdom

    Drug Class: Antidepressant,
    Generic Name: Paroxetine,
    Brand Name: Paxil, Seroxat,

    Age: Adults (18 and over)

    Side Effects: Aggression, Violence, Hostility,
Summary: A study published in Public Library of Science Medicine determined that newer Antidepressants could increase the risk of violence in people taking them. They looked specifically at GlaxoSmithKline's Paxil and concluded the drug raises the risk of severe violence in some people.

In 2006 I went back to work in secular employment to jump start my Social Security which I had opted out of in 1984. My background (Military) and training (Law Enforcement) qualified me as Physical Security Manager for a San Diego based defense contractor with over 6,000 employees. I managed a 175 man uniformed guard force, all armed, all POST certified (California Commission on Peach Officer Standards and Training), and all with Military experience in the combat arms. They not only wore sidearms, but on some occasions they also carried AR-15s and Remington 870 pump shotguns. Our quick response team (think SWAT type) also had all of the above in addition to highly modified Remington 700 BDL .308 sniper rifles with Unertl 3-9 power scopes.

Almost all the executives in the company were retired military. The CEO was a retired Admiral. When some of the women in HR complained about all the guns the CEO told them if they didn't like it they could always resign. He told them that it was his responsibility to provide a safe and secure working environment for all the company's employees and that he had delegated that responsibility to me and he had confidence in my judgment.

Too bad more people don't think like that. The presence of guns should make people feel more secure, not paranoid. :)

It is very easy to get a concealed license in Kentucky. All one must do is take an eight hour course and shoot a target a blind man could hit. In fact, in Kentucky, more freedom is allowed without a license than some states with a license. Without a license one can carry a gun in a holster. In a car, one can have a loaded gun on a front seat or in a glove compartment. However, I live on the Illinois border, and driving across the river is like entering another world. Do not get caught with a loaded gun there.

Collecting guns is not a hobby I care to have. I own enough to protect my family. A 38 revolver and an assortment of rifles does what I need.

Any issue has extremes. Gun control on law abiding American citizens is not only unConstitutional, but enhances incidents like yesterday. On the other hand, some people has an unhealthy love affair with fire arms. Their purpose is protection, not to make one more powerful or important.

Law abiding citizens having firearms can limit incidents like this for sure, but not eliminate them. Only a change of heart can do that. The thing that is so frustrating is that once someone decides to do something like that, especially if they have planned it well and kept it to themselves, it is practically impossible to stop. For example, if an angry church member decides to waste a congregation during Sunday morning worship, and his timing is during a prayer, it will be over before anyone realizes what took place. In addition, the criminal committing such an act usually kills themselves. Even if they do survive, there is no earthly judgement or justice we can administer that pays for such a evil deed.

Most of the time, people who have seen others die by a gun in any setting tend to not be a fan of guns, but look at them as a necessary tool.
