Waste of money, IMHO. Kind of like choir robes.

We have had visitors to our church because they saw the steeple from the interstate. So, no. Not a waste of money.

(And we don't have choir robes ;) )

Keep me simple, keep a cross on top, and make sure they are lit in the evening. That's about it for what we do with ours.

Kinda like wearing suits & ties.

My friend & pastor has a building & maintenance budget of about $10,000 a year..... maybe that even includes all operating costs. He runs the heating & AC each year as well as flushes the toilets & puts on the lights. Thats all.

The people do the rest. No organs, lovely A Capella singing & true spiritual prayer. You get baptized in da local river (with a current)!

Waste of money. I would not go out of my way to tear one down, but I would not build one either.

Actually many churches make money off their steeple. Cell phone companies are putting the tower in steeples, as local ordinance often prohibits stand alone towers.

Give me a non-descript store-front church pushing fifty members. All you need is some chairs, hymnals, a King James Bible, and a coffee maker.

Scratch the "King James" and leave it as "Bible" and I'm in full agreement....although it'd be nice to have doughnuts with that coffee.

oh....and while I would be content with hymnals I would enjoy a mix of contemporary songs added in.

I cannot discuss why I resigned that position and we left that church without breaking confidentiality. It was heart breaking and is not so trivial as snacks being served before church.

IMHO, steeples, like the building itself, is just another money-pit tradition that does nothing to fulfill the purposes for assembling. Their just another reason for focusing on & calling a man-made building the "church" instead of the people as the regenerate Church of God.
