Unions go too far

There are legitimate reasons for refusing the flu shot.

 

I would suggest that it depends on whether or not they are ill and the patient in question. I am sure you, like me, have visited people that required you to wear mask, gloves, and gown.

 

Health workers should be required to get flu shots.

My son works [non union] at maintenance in a nursing home. He was not required to get a flue shot and none of the staff were. It is particularly important that those who work in a nursing home get flu shots. It also seems to me that the company should pay for the shots, even if there is no risk to the residents. One employee gets the flu others get the flu. Of course if you are out sick there is no pay!

 

Workers in some companies are required to wear glasses, helmets, steel-toed shoes for their own protection. Why shouldn't health care workers who are susceptible to the flu be required to wear masks for the protection of their patients? Even patients with any sign of a seasonal bug are required to wear one for the protection of others when visiting my doctor.

So, this is just 2-cents, for whatever copper is worth today.

Whatever the union had to say or didn't have to say.....

People who have direct contact with large groups of people should take whatever precautions that are necessary to avoid infecting others, if/when they are ill from a agent that can be passed to others.

It is a personal responsibility. Period.

I've been through more than one check out line at the grocery store, where the cashier should have been at home and in the bed. Or, at least at home. Hand/cart sanitizers aren't worth a hill of beans if a sick cashier has handled everything I purchased.

Health care workers assume this responsbility when they accept a job that brings them into contact with people who may have compromised immune systems for whatever reason.

It is a corporate responsibility. Period.

1) A business should not hire people who will not take any precaution available to ensure they don't health of their customers. Can't/won't take a seasonal flu shot, don't hire them.

2) A business should not apply penaltys to anyone who takes proper (medically recommended) precautions. (reprimands, threats to fire, etc.)

It is a personal/corporate responsibility. Period.
It isn't about money regardless of which role is involved.

Sick people should stay at home, even if it costs a day's pay and/or a company has honor they sick pay policy.

Far too often, in my working life, I've seen someone come to work when they should have been at home. Within a few days, almost everyone in the work force was also sick. There's no way of knowing how many people those sick cashiers infected during the course of their work shift.

There's no way of knowing how many have died because health care workers refused, for whatever reason, to follow medically prescribed precautions to ensure their personal illness wasn't spread to others.

Nobody should be forced to get a flu shot. Nobody should be forced to get ANY shot.


But if a health care worker is put in a position where they are in such close proximty to a patient that a contagious infection could occur, they should be wearing a mask & gloves, whether or not they've had a shot.
