I lead a small group, and I would like to go into the Old Testament after our next study. Is there a brief study (say about 12 weeks) that you could recommend that gives a general survey of the Old Testament. In particular...a study that dedicates much of the study to passages that point to Jesus.

OT introduction textbooks are hundreds of pages and months of study, and one comes out with a dry, mechanical notion of the structure and content of the OT.

One of the primary emphases in Matthew's Gospel is the fulfillment of OT prophecy. Perhaps study Matthew with an emaphsis on the "that it might fulfilled" passages.

Maybe you could put together your own study? Making sure your small group has a grasp on the following?

    [1] OLD TESTAMENT

The Pentateuch, or the Law, or the Law of Moses
    :
    Genesis
    Exodus
    Leviticus
    Numbers
    Deuternomy

    The Books of History:
    (pre-kingdom era)
    Joshua
    Judges
    Ruth
    (kingdom era)
    1-2 Samuel
    1-2 Kings
    1-2 Chronicles
    (post-kingdom era)
    Ezra
    Nehemiah
    Esther

    The Books of Poetry:
    Job
    Psalms
    Proverbs
    Ecclesiastes
    Song of Solomon

The Major Prophets (called that because of their length, not importance):
    (pre-exile)
    Isaiah
    Jeremiah
    Lamentations
    (during exile)
    Ezekiel
    Daniel

The Minor Prophets (called that because of their brevity not any relative unimportance):
    (pre-exile)
    Hosea
    Joel
    Amos
    Obadiah
    Jonah
    Micah
    Nahum
    Habbakuk
    Zephaniah
    (post exile)
    Haggai
    Zechariah
    Malachi

[3] Here's a website that has Messianic prophecy listed and also the places in the New Testament where that prophecy was fulfilled.

[4] I think after that, you could tell where your group was going in terms of interesta and wanting to do further study.
