I went to a Christmas Eve service with a family member last night. I participated in the worship part of the service and had an enjoyable time. One thing I notice was that all three pastor who had a short message or presentation had to have dressed down before coming to Church. One of the pastors is a good friend of mine and I know he would not sit around the house dressed like he was dressed. He looked as he was dressed to work in a flowerbed or clean the garage. He had on jeans with a shirt that was not tucked in and a pull over sweater that was too short for him. My question is,why do they do so and what is the purpose of this.

I have no idea. Anyone who was involved in the service was dressed appropriately. Women were mostly in slacks/sweaters/blouses/dresses and men all had on slacks and jackets with a button down shirt or a polo. I've not seen the pastors dressing down other than on regular Sundays at our campus, my husband tends to wear a polo and khakis because he gets too hot in a jacket and with his terrible eczema, he will bleed through a dress shirt in a matter of minutes. At least a dark cotton polo will last a bit longer.

Dressed down according to who? At our church there are a lot of jeans and boots. Plenty of hats hung on the hat rack. We have boot brushes at every door so as not to drag in the mud. It may be dressed down in suburbia but suburbia is not everywhere.

There is no more subjective measurement of ministry than how one dresses.

I'm all for looking professional, but for us that means khakis/slacks, polo or dress shirt and nicer shoes. For my friend in Zambia that means something different, for my friend in Polynesia that something else.

    So true.
Amazing how people spend more time focusing on how the staff dresses rather than worshiping the Savior. I could not even tell you what my pastor wore at our christmas eve service. I was not there for him. I was there to celebrate my Savior.

Id save the suits & ties for the Lawyers, the Under Takers, Bankers, Politicians & what ever thief profession you may want to mark those guys for. Ive worn them for years....it was the uniform but that doesnt develop character. Id prefer to see someone who is comfortable & focused on communicating Christs love.

Why don't Attorneys dress down.? (I interpret dress down as wearing something other then what you normally wear)

I'm usually more concerned with someone's words than their appearance.

I grew up in a culture where folks wore their "Sunday best" to church. Things have grown less dressy over the years, along with the coarsening of our culture.

Although I'm an old geezer, informal or casual is okay, but contrived grunge still turns me off. And for older folks like me, it's a distraction from the message.

A distraction from the message is a completely subjective aspect of the discussion. A suit coat and tie might be a distraction for a young person. Therefore, it is best to not make standards based on our own preferences.

I Wonder if James 2:1-4 may apply to this?

James 2 - New King James Version (NKJV)

"My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?"

Just wondering if some times we get toooooo caught up in what the people wear on the outside, than what they look like on the inside?

It is my opinion, that clothes do not make the man [or woman], and more importantly; I can't believe that God cares as much about what we wear when we come to church so long as we at least come to church!

Some will argue this verse does not pertain to the issue above, but, I wonder?

Hmm, I was in service last night in blue jeans, a tank top and a sweater. I came straight from visiting my parents and was MUCH more interested in relaxing (because my parents are anything but) and worshipping and finally getting a little bit of Christmas spirit than worrying about what I was wearing. And you know what? Not single soul there cared one whit about what I was wearing and I couldn't tell you what a single one of them had on.

Church isn't about dress, it's about Christ.

There are some churches in my area that are so focused on dress that they preach against the perils of, for example, women wearing pants.

I really don't know what the point is. Worship of God is more important.

Yes. But that's not the point, nor is it related.
