Would say that penal substitution fits best, as the Jesus died in place of sinners, and he paid in full the sin debt/obligation due to God for our benefit!

"Christ bore a satisfactory punishment for our sins," was argued convincingly by St. Thomas Aquinas in the 'Summa'. Christ's passion and death solves the problem of 'past sin' and is the solution to the problem of future sin'.

Walter, just curious: Did you hold the Satisfaction view before you decided to become Roman Catholic?

I voted for several options, as many of these are not mutually exclusive

Just read the entire thread, a very good one.

I saw one proponent of Christus Victor was banned. Does that happen a lot here? What are grounds for banning? I wouldn't think that doctrinal disagreement should be such grounds.

Thanks, 12Strings, and Doubting Thomas, for your votes. Also, HoS and Tom Butler.

Quite a diversity of opinion we have so far.

I didn't know Michael was Banned until Just now...I knew he had moved down to this non-Baptist thread because the Moderators did not consider him to be "baptist". I do know he had some unique views, and got into some spats with people...I don't know why he was banned, but his views were known for quite a while before his banning.

I know they WILL ban someone if they feel he/she is strongly promoting something they consider to be serious false teaching...but I don't really know what qualifies, and don't know the exact reason for Michael's banning.

Can't we have an option, "All of them"? That's what I would have gone for!

IF there is no substitutionary aspect to the atonement, by what basis does God forgive our sins and transgressions?
He demanded a blood sacrifice under the OT system, which pointe dto the lamg of God, who shed his blood for the sins of man...

If not a penal substitute, what was Jesus doing there?

The other views adequately answer that question.

how so? For if there is no shedding of blood, there cannot be any remission for sins, and God laid the sins of us upon Him as the sin bearer, so cannot get any more substitutionary than that!
