Revival meetings

Just thinking out loud here but... If you have a revival service -aimed to revive the congregation - why would you have to hold them on a regular basis? I mean if folks are falling out of their seats to get right with the Lord in the spring why would you have to come back in the fall and do it all over again? Shouldn't a revival stick a bit longer than a few months? Now if you're holding regular pep rallies for the church folk I could see them wanting to come back two or three times a year.

 

We haven't done them in about twenty years (or so I've been told.) They don't seem to work awfully well in our context.

We do invite evangelistic speakers in from time to time and do a lot of outreach ministry in our area outside the campus of our church.

Since I believe the list given in Ephesians 4:11 are offices and not gifts, I believe the office of evangelist is an important one in the Church today.

 

The use of the word "revival" in the way it is often used to refer to a special yearly meeting is a misnomer. True revivals cannot be scheduled. They can be prayed for and waited upon but never scheduled. No true revival in history was ever scheduled by man.

The church I attend now hasn't ever had one. It is a new church, only about 7 years old.

The other church I have a connection with hasn't had a revival in 10 to 15 years.

 

I was saved in 1986 and the first 3 or 4 churches I was a member of did revivals every year. They were all SBC churches. I just thought it was what all SBC churches did. Now I haven't been to a revival in several years and the SBC church we are members at don't have revivals. I agree with the posts in here that we shouldn't be scheduling revivals, they should just happen. I look back at the revivals I attended and see the silly tricks and gimmicks to get people to walk the isle. At the time I was all for them.

 

didn't real revival "break out" when people were seeking God from the heart, were 'fed up" with living weak and being threatened by the world influences?
