    I just watched the vidio.

It was one of the stupidest, most idiotic things I have ever wasted my time watching in my 50 some odd years of life. He gets a grade of F-. The entire class is DUMBER having read it. :tonofbricks:

Congratulations Mark Driscoll. That was utterly rediculous. I have been in many churches in my day, and I have never.. NEVER... seen what is being promoted here. Maybe they are out there, but I sure have never encounterd it.

I have....lots of times. What do you think Luke was ranting about. And Zaak even admitted to it.

To me, there is a world of difference between genuine and Godly masculinity and machismo. Driscoll seems to be advocating the latter.

My father and many other Christian men at several churches are good and Godly masculine men. They aren't afraid to confront evil or speak up for righteousness. But they aren't going around AS Christian men and in the name of Jesus "slaughtering other men" or punching them in the nose. And they sing songs both about and to Jesus - in choir and the congregation. They lead the churches and their home - 99% by example.

Driscoll mentions David's reknown for slaughtering other men. God led David in those battles, but also forbade David from building the Temple because of the "blood on his hands". To me, David is better remembered for his songs to the Lord....

....songs that expressed a wide variety of emotion. Songs that became Holy Scripture. And David's authorship of these Psalms does not in any way deter from his masculinity because singing songs and expressing emotion is NOT a uniquely feminine trait.

Really? Men who attend church regularly and wear sweater vests and sing congregational hymns and write poems and express varied emotions don't ever do any of these things? Women can't do any of these things and retain their femininity?

These things are hallmarks of manly innovation? Of masculinity? Of spiritual manliness?

What's sad to me is confusing masculinity with machismo.

You need to understand the culture he's living in - Seattle. It's a very different world and not one where you'd typically see the kind of guys I see around here or what you guys might see. Our culture here is a lot of blue collar workers - construction, firemen, police, etc. So our kind of guys are not the kind that sit around Starbucks drinking a latte listening to some indy music like he has. :)

Well, that is two minutes of my life I wish I had back. Although I tend to agree with him about churches that sing creepy love songs to Jesus. “Jesus-is-my-boyfriend” type praise songs feel really creepy to sing especially when surrounded by enraptured people swaying back and forth and side to side with their eyes closed. Here is an example of one of those songs by 'Casting Crowns':

    Your Love is Extravagant

    Your love is extravagant
    Your friendship, it is intimate
I feel like moving to the rhythm of Your grace
Your fragrance is intoxicating in our secret place
    Your love is extravagant

Spread wide in the arms of Christ is the love that covers sin
No greater love have I ever known You considered me a friend
    Capture my heart again

Spread wide in the arms of Christ is the love that covers sin
No greater love have I ever known; You considered me a friend

    Capture my heart again
    Your love is extravagant
    Your friendship, it is intimate

No, there is more to this than just machismo. Look around the room next time your in church & tell me how many effeminate men are there, it really is scary. Most men go to church when mommy drags them there. As time goes on most men blow it off in there 20's & probably wont go back till they start having kids & there wives insist they go there "for the kids" do they get involved again "for a time" as the kids grow up they again move away & not till they are geezers do they maybe drag their butts back in there to finally get right with God. Every-things run by the women anyway.

The point is what really attracts men to church & what keeps them from coming to church. No., 1 Boring lazy same old same old tired church services. I have gotten some of my best sleep nodding off in pastors sermons (seriously). Listen, if your going to bore me to death then just put it on a pod cast & I will catch it later on my PC  (2) I really have nothing in common with most of you folks & I really dont want to break bread with you .... small talk small talk Egads, get me out of here....there is a game on that Im missing. Tell you what, call me when you want to walk the streets at 6AM in the morning & go into the Latino homes & on street corners or go over to the drunk tanks & talk to some guy who has a real problem & wont admit to it. Even talk to me if you want to organize a pickup game or go to the pub. Try to get an American Pastor who is willing to go out to the local pub & talk 'guy stuff'. Note, its done in England--just ask Matt Black. Oh & while we are on the subject....dont call me to volunteer for some gay church program like VBS. If you want to put a roof on some old ladys house or fix some peoples cars who dont have the money to fix them call (my son) LOL ...yea OK & me.

But you have to admit, there is a real disconnect between guys & church. So how are you addressing it?

Man, I don't even know how to respond to most of this  VBS is a "gay church program?!? Unbelievable! Dude, you need some serious soul searching. You act like church and serving is all about us.

Boy that effeminate Jesus...enjoying the children's company, washing feet and all...

I calls them as I sees them....these churches are full of dead programs, dieing people & lame & out of touch services. If you cant see that, go get your eyes checked & then stop playing church & start acting it. Get out to communities & do something....make them your mission. Not just sitting inside & singing pretty songs...thats OK , I guess but it aint the whole enchilada.

you know that when I was a kid, the RC Priest would walk to our house & sit in our kitchen & talk through lifes difficulties with my mother....a young widow with 3 kids (one being Cerebral Palsy). The guy would arrange places for us to play basketball & serve as the referee. Mr Ed Schultz of the Nights of Columbus would take me to Father & Son breakfasts so I could see Ed Kranepool of the Mets & some guys from the Jets & Giants. Although I disprove of the RC Church as a legitimate Christian Church, they at least took care of their communities. I dont see that with most baptist churches today. Rather what your supposed to do is come to church at 11AM on Sunday, sing songs & read scripture & your golden. Well I dont buy that....that aint what Christ is all about.

And what is it you dont understand about foot washing? Its done in my church, how bout yours?

Indeed, as EW&F has said, we do have a vibrant Men's Ministry here which is also closely related to these guys

This excites my Welsh blood, but I have years of American family who 1st came here to have a place to work & live in freedom, where they wouldn't have to be hauled out of there homes & shot in front of their families by the oppressive government because they were "Calvinists" .... here I can fight oppression, principally because we have a government that has a Constitution protecting our rights. Because of this Constitution I have recently gone to court (over a Rooster & some chickens) & {because of a constitutional Judge / Thank God} won the case. Thats America!!!!

But I do applaud my brethren in the UK with this movement (and I will lift a toast to them with Highland Scotch) for their being "Men" and not afraid of that. Good lads! :applause:

It had better be a single malt then! And we haven't shot any Calvinists this side of the Pond for nearly 300 years (unless they annoy us in some small way or other).

I think it's Deanston. You got enough of the Calvies in Scotland...or did. The Sais shot my wifes ancestors for being Covenanter's. Scots have long memories (stubborn buggers). You want to see some people that hold a grudge. Enough to never belong to an Anglican church. And the Welsh should remember that as well.

The persecution of the Covenanters was as much about Charles "Where's Ma Head" Stuart's desire to have uniformity in his kingdoms as it was to do with matters spiritual. And he was Scottish BTW ...

On a lighter note, our men's ministry bade farewell to Steve Martin (not that one!) the head of the men's ministry who is heading Oop North to join Carl and the other lat CVM. Photo to follow....

[IMG]...as promised. Steve is the one on the right in matelot fancy dress; our vicar is on the left (I think he may even have stood a round last night!).

It helps that a lot of our guys are either serving or ex-military, I think. Steve for example has given 30+ years of his adult life to the navy, first on active service and more latterly as head of the Brit Naval Christian Fellowship. He will be an immense loss to them and indeed to us but a great asset to Carl Beech and the other guys at CVM.

[OK, does anyone know why the pic isn't showing?]
