    I'm interested in painting the most beautifully compelling pictures and images and metaphors and stories and explanations possible that will put Jesus in language for a world that desperately needs to hear it.

    What language, which translation?

    Why does a preacher preach if all he/she needs to do is read scripture aloud?

    CB, All I see in the other thread is someone disagreeing with you about the potency of one particular extra-biblical metaphor describing the afterlife.

    Everyone - including the person disagreeing with you - knows the Bible is full of figurative language, including metaphors.

    Even figurative language must contain the full truth of something - even in it's poetic license. Just because the Bible contains metaphors doesn't mean that every metaphor used by flawed humans to describe the doctrine OF the Bible is a proper one or potent one.

    Pictures is part of our problem: lust of the eyes. We love icons, dead and alive. This is part of our depravity--along with lust of flesh and pride of life.

    "God is Spirit. They who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit, and in Truth."

    Preach The Word--it still convicts of sin, righteousness and judgement to come.

    Now what? Turn off the T.V. for six months.

    Repent and do the first works.

    Even so, come Lord Jesus.

    Over a number of months ... maybe even a year or so ... I have seen negative comments about metaphors ... the comments using the word as a catchall to superficially attack another persons post.

    That does not always seem to be the case. But it should be universally recognized as true.

    I agree. But neither does it mean that a person who others disagree with is always wrong if they use a metaphor.

    Why must we paint "beautiful and compelling" pictures of Jesus? Why must we sugarcoat Him to make Him more palatable to the world? Yes, we want to be able to show Him as He really is to the world but we can't change who Jesus is to make him more acceptable. That is when we ignore His righteousness and just go with "love". We make Jesus all mushy and gushy and "loving everyone no matter what they are" kind of stuff and that is not helpful to the Gospel. It will bring people to fall in love with a false Jesus - one that is not the Jesus of the Word and that is how we end up with all these people who claim to be Christians but are really not.

    But I agree that we need to use language that the world will understand. Propitiation is not a term that the world will get but they will understand the satisfaction of a debt. While it's not a completely perfect substitution, it's enough for a layman to understand. We need to be careful to not use "Christianese" when trying to bring the Gospel to the unbeliever because it just won't make sense to them. But we can't change who Jesus is. That's just wrong.
