It seems in this day - worship only means the singing portion of a service - and that the worship leader is the song leader.

To me - singing is only PART of the service.

Another thing - I am used to the "hymn sandwich" type of service. Now days - the music - aka worship is all lumped together.

    Thoughts?

Agreed that common termonology does not help us here. I generally refer to myself as the "song-leader," or "The guy who leads the music." The Pastor's sermon should lead us to worship God as much as the music does.

I define worship as using different means to tell God the truth about Himself.

isn't worship though really everything that we do and say, its like all aspects of our lives to be glorifing god? Worship by commiting our talents/gift/monies etc to His service and work?

    Exactly!
So my question is why do many think worship is only the music and more specifically the song leader is referred to as the worship pastor?

I prefer the music to be about God.

The question is What is Worship.

Worship is living my life in praise of God.

The music is of the joy of my heart.

All the answers you listed are preference. It doesn't have anything to do with worship.

Worship is the praise, adoration, and, total commitment to the Lord. Music is one way to express it. Traditional vs contemporary has nothing to do with the question of the thread. Traditional today was contemporary at one point in time. If the old goats that think only sacred music comes out of the Baptist hymnal would be shocked at having to hear music the way Psalms was sung back in Jesus' time. They would not like it. Then again, this is probably the same crowd that believes that not dancing honors the Lord.

Still waiting on a reply to my question in post # 5 " why is the song leader is referred to as the worship pastor?

Often I wonder if CCM is truly worship I agree with Saturn - "Worship is the praise, adoration, and, total commitment to the Lord. "

What I see with CCM is just "swinging" to the music, many have no ideal what the words are, let alone know their meaning. As far as total commitment - I see very little of that.

I often mention from the pulpit "Baptists lie the most when we are singing.

I ask when singing, are we truly giving praise, adoration and total commitment to the Lord?

The reason I put the poll the way I did was to see what emphasis we put on the music

Salty, I chose other from your poll.

We don't need to play a single note on an instrument or to sing a single line from any song to worship our Lord and Saviour.

We CAN use our talents (an even those without talent - like me) to make a joyful noise unto our Lord.

IMO, the real issue is when "performance" takes priority over humbly kneeling in prayer. In this context, it doesn't matter if the hymn was written yesterday or 200 years ago. If it is sung as entertainment, as to entertain the crowd, it isn't worship. If it is sung to show off personal skills and talents, it isn't worship.

The Old Rugged Cross is one of my favorite hymns. It can be "performed". It can be done as "entertainment". And, it can be sung in the middle of a corn field, from the heart, as true worship of our Lord.

    Why the "title" worship pastor?

Because it seems that some desire titles. Titles that carry more prestige in the eyes of man. Song Leader isn't powerful enough. Choir Leader isn't powerful enough, nor is Music Director. None of these elevate the person to the height of their sense of self importance.

When self becomes dominate, then it isn't worship of our Lord. Whether it's in the form of pride in "title" or "performance", God becomes secondary. When music is for music's sake, it isn't worship.

Music can be a wonderful way to worship our Lord. It can also be a thing worshiped. As with so many other things, it all depends of what's in the heart of each one involved. So often we forget that God knows all that is and isn't there. And that God gave each the ability to some degree to "know them by their fruits".

:flower: A little child can lead a congregation to worship our Saviour in the true spirit of what worship means.

    What's in a title?

I introduce the hymns we sing. For the past 25 years I've been called:

    song director
    song leader
    song mister
    song dude
    choir director
    choir leader
    music director
    music leader
    music minister
    music pastor
    music man
    minister of music
    worship leader
    worship pastor

C'mon, I've been called more than half of these at the same church over the past 11 years. Can we pick just one and stick with it. I vote song dude.

often a lot! Why should the song leader be called worship pastor - when singing is only part of worship - IMHO - the message is the core of the service- thus the pastor should be considered the "worship pastor"

Why should anyone have "worship" in their title?

Worship of our Lord is the primary reason, or should be, that each person walks in the doors of their church.

When God looks over an assembled group of folks, the true "worship leader" may be the person, sitting in the back, who cleaned the toilets in the Fellowship Hall. Or, the fellow who mowed the grass of his disabled neighbor, instead of mowing his own.
