Would you preform a wedding for an illegal to a US citizen while knowing the marriage is only so the individual can stay in the country?

(If you are not a pastor - well, just pretend you are)

since this will go off OP a bit - we will extend it to, if a member told you, as a pastor in confidence, that he was in the country illegally - what would you do?

Nope. Marriage is a covenant with God. It is not to be used to circumvent the law. There are other avenues that may be used to address his illegality, but marriage just to stay in the country is not one.

no, for the purpose of the wedding is to make a covenat before god for a man/woman for reasons NOT what you gave!

Now, what if they really did love each other as God commands, and met that provosion, in same circumstances?

    HELP ! ! !

I've agreed with Zaac on something. :)

I can't imagine a God called pastor agreeing to try to pull God into an illegal act of this nature. As soon as the statutes of limitation run out, most likely divorce papers will be filled the next day.

As to the second question, I'd better leave that to pastors who have faced the ethics with regards to what they've heard in confidence. Plus, in this particular situation, there may be civil penalties, if it can be proved that anyone, with legal authority to marry folks, aids and abets this crime.

Probably not preform wedding and nothing as far as reporting goes, but all I could to help them gain legal status.

I am not a pastor, but if I were one, I would have a policy of not marrying any couple where I have reason to believe that one or the other or both spouses (to be) are not living close to the Lord.

I do not think an illegal alien can live consistency close to the Lord while harboring the sin of continuing to break the legitimate law of the land.

As compassionate believers, we should reach out to illegal aliens and share with them the Gospel of Christ. But once they are saved and are growing in grace, we should then admonish them to get their house in order and voluntarily return to their own country as soon as they can manage to do so. (Taking the Gospel of Christ back to their own people in the process).

If steps are being taken to do this, and the people involved are seeking God with their whole heart, then it may be acceptable to marry them, especially if both of them fully understand that they will or may have to return to the other country and conduct themselves within the confines of the legitimate law.

By the way, the laws about marriage and naturalization are very complicated, and have to do with the person's home country as well as the US. I do not pretend to be an expert on them, but I do know that when my cousin jumped though all the legal hoops to marry his (now) wife from Canada, they had to wait many months longer than they had hoped in order for her VISA to be approved. What if she had come in illegally and they had gotten married, then what?? Just proceed carefully, the legalities are very complicated.

I agree with you and Zaac. The purpose of marriage is in Genesis, and it is not to gain access across the border.

LOL, I told Zaac a while back the Second Coming must be near, as I had started agreeing with him. You should have seen us during the election.

In Order to Not Agree With Zaac...

...I chose to agree with your agreement with Zaac  No I wouldn't preform any marriage that is going to circumvent the law I am already concerned over.

It would be hypocritical on my behalf to marry two people trying to avoid the legality of citizenship in the first place. Secondly, it does not seem to be a marriage of the heart, but a marriage of convenience! :BangHead:

Not a pastor, but every time I see this thread I can't help but wonder, 'how do you preform a wedding'? Is it akin to a wedding rehearsal? Or what? :)
