Commentary Set

    I am looking to buy a scholarly commentary set and have narrowed my search down to two. I need some advice of which of the two would be better; holding to conservative values. Please advise of which would be the best set or if you have other suggestion. However, I am not looking for popular commentaries such as Vernon McGee or Warren Wiersbe.

    1. New International Commentary on the New Testament
    2. Word Biblical Commentary

    I have other Commentaries such as Macarthur commentary Set, New American Commentary (NAC), and The Bible Speaks Today (BST) and I find myself usually in agreement with these commentaries. Thank you for your help.

    The 6 volume matthew henry Set is devotional written but gives sever al good verses to look up. For Nt commentaries,

    Which Commentary Set would you pick between: New International Commentary on the New Testament or Word Biblical Commentary. As these are the two I'm considering; thank you for your help.

    You've got a tough choice.

    I'll give you my recommendation and then make a recommendation:

    Buy the NICNT. It's generally more recent and has been scholarship. Are you going to buy the NICOT too?


    Now, that said, my personal approach in commentary buying has been to shirk the sets. Some are great, others not so great. Personally for what you'll spend on an entire commentary set you can look up the best commentaries on each book, go to Amazon or B&N or Fetchbook.info and find them (kinda used) in good shape.

    This is how I've built my commentary library. I've sought out the best three commentaries on each book of the Bible. My preference is for highly technical commentaries. But I also know the biblical languages and can still pick through Latin, German, and French.

    You can search based on your abilities, rigor, approach, series, book, and rating. It is a good site.

    Do you want digital or hard copy? Accordance is offering the entire Word Biblical Commentary set (both OT and NT) for $299 right now for a limited time. I've had it and like it. I don't own and haven't even tried the other you mention, but have heard good things about it.

    Thanks for the advice. I plan on buying the OT commentary also and would rather have hard copy instead of digital.

    How about the The Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament ?
    Up to date, evangelical scholarship?

    I recommend the New International Commentaries series as it is your first - - - better suited to pastoral and devotional pursuits but still an excellent scholarly set

    ... BUT ...

    eventually you'll want Word Biblical Commentaries even if it might stretch your "conservative values".

    and mix in some Spurgeon, Gill, calvin, luthor, even Wesley while you are getting commentaries together!
