I know someone in a Church. This person thinks that whatever the pastor says is what the Bible says and that he can never disagree with the pastor. If he disagrees with the pastor he feels really guilty.. I have kindly tried to show this friend Acts 17 and teach him about the Bereans but it has done no good because the pastor has not taught that. To me its more about being spirit led and driven by the Bible than by what the pastor says as plenty of pastors say that the KJV is God's only translation, wearing pants is a sin, having a beard is a sin, going to the movies is a sin and so forth. However I think only prayer and the Holy Spirit can help this friend. Think of the Midonites and other Fundamentalist groups that bear people down with burdens and the yoke of slavery. This is not Biblical nor right and Jesus had strong words to say about legalists. Sad how very sad it is...

C.H. Spurgeon was totally against christians going to the theater and the music hall. I was reading one of his sermons and he was in agreement with a pastor that had turned one man out of the church for going to the theater. If every christan spent as much time reading the bible and praying as they did watching tv and drinking beer they would have a stronger, closer walk with the Lord. When i look at men wearing long hair i see men trying to make a statement. Back in the sixties hippies wore long hair as a statement of rebellion against the exstablishment. Usually when you see men with long stringy greasy hair their usually pot smokers too. Long hair on men has become a worldly look, a look of rebellion. The world has come to expect that christians look like christians and act like christians or they won't give you the time of day. Paul put it like this, 1 Cor 9:22 To the weak bacame i weak, that i might gain the weak: i am made all things to all men, that i might by all means save some.

The idea that "If you resist my teaching you are rebelling against Those whom the Lord has put over you" has been the ground work for many false teachings and the foundation of numerous cults. Unfortunately this quite often comes from the pulpit of some of our evangelical churches. This is not going to change. As to the long haired youth, I made a lot of bad decessions in my younger days by judging persons by the length of their hair and the cut of their clothes. How many lives of our young men would we have saved if we had listened to them about staying out of Vietnam, a scar that America will always carry.

Try showing him 1 Kings 13. Emphasize verses 9 (what the young man of God had been told not to do by God); 11 (the old prophet/man of God); 17 (the young man of God telling the old man of God his restrictions); 18 (the old man of God lying to the young man of God); 24 (what happened because the young man of God allowed the old man of God to lead him astray).

The same thing could be said about the civil war between the states. This war was still being fought in peoples minds when i was a young boy.

the cults and false religions ALL seek to impose a rigidity on their groups thinking, so to see the leader as in a Messiah role, as ONLY his views arfe the correct ones to hold!

And Jesus MUCH more concerned about what is in our hearts and minds being daily practiced than if we went to a play, opera, ballgame etc!

    1. It's not OK to kick people out of church for going to the theater.
    2. Long hair on men has not been in fashion for 25 years.
    3. Not everyone with long hair smokes weed.
    4. If every Christan spent as much time reading the bible and praying as they did <fill in the blank> and <fill in the blank> they would have a stronger, closer walk with the Lord.

Every kind of hair style you can think of is fashionable. Men in professional gospel singing groups wear their hair that looks like they just got out of bed, and yes there are men that still wear long hair. No it's not OK anymore to kick people out of the church for anything because you can't tell the church from the world.

Isn't the Baptist standard by which hair is considered long a bit subjective? If paintings of him are accurate, Christ would have looked like a hippee.

The answer to the original question is witchcraft. Paul asked the Galatians who had bewitched them that they would turn back to the Law. That is the essence of pastor worship. It is a desire for a priest who will tell them what to think, what to believe, & what God wants to say to them. It is the relinquishing of their spiritual birthright of the priesthood of the believers which gives access to the Father to ALL who believe under the authority of the one true High Priest. People want to be sheep. Just look at the political climate in America. Millions upon millions of people willingly, gladly submit all independent thought to professors, "journalists", politicians, & "scientists". America is where she is today because believers have traded their critical thinking skills for a priestly-pastor who will tell them how & what to think.
