Bibles Guidelines for speaking in Tongues

1 Thess.5:19-21 “do not quench the Spirit. do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.”

1 Cor.14:39 We are not to forbid or say it is wrong to 'speak in tongues. With this as our theme lets look at how tongues are to function.

1 Cor.14:2 “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God.” Paul states the fact that if the tongue is unknown to the speaker and to those who hear it; is a mystery. Vs. 4 He edifies (pride) only himself of which the gift is not functioning for its purpose. Vs. 5 He wished that all spoke in tongues but more so that they prophesy, for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in a tongue unless he interprets, that the church may receive edification.” This is the purpose of gifts to build up the body.

1 Corinthians 14:4 He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church. This is a spiritual building up of the individual, which one of the possible meanings is that Paul is explaining that the person with the tongue understands the meaning, of the particular “tongue” spoken but “the church,” the congregation, does not until it is interpreted.

Paul says for it to be significant it must communicate, it must be a language vs.11 therefore if I do not know the meaning of the language I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.” It must be understood for edification; love will benefit others. This is why in vs.13 Paul says to pray that he may interpret.

Both tongues and prophecy were to be limited in number and done in order. They are not to be done collectively by the Church. Though some claim this i s a prayer language. If so it is to be be silently practiced.

There must be an interpreter present vs.27-28 “If anyone speaks in a tongue let there be two or three at the most, each in turn and let one interpret, if there is no interpreter let him keep silent in the Church and let him speak to himself and to God,” as vs.4 says “one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.” Notice, there is order as each speaks in turn. There must be a known interpreter present if you are to speak it out loud. If no interpreter is present then you are to speak to yourself and keep silent in the Church or pray that you may interpret. This shows it was a language since it needed translation. To not do this would bring confusion. 1 Cor.14:23: “Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?”

V.10-13 “There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.”

Here Paul identifies tongues as a language spoken in our world. So a tongue can be an ancient language but it is one mankind spoke.

V.12-13 “Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.” The one speaks in this other language should pray to interpret it or make sure there is someone among them who can interpret it.

1 Corinthians 14:14 “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.” To pray in an unknown tongue, means that the “tongue” the person is speaking is an unknown language to them in prayer. To know what the spirit is saying it must be interpreted.

V.15 Here Paul compares praying and singing in another language. I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with understanding, and “I will sing with the spirit” (a tongue) and I will also sing with understanding.” they are to sing with the understanding (the interpretation can be known to one who spoke a tongue).

V.16 “Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit” If you pray for some one they need to hear an interpretation or how would they agree? (say amen).

Vs.19 “ Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding that I might teach others also than 10,000 words in a tongue.”Paul is addressing not being able to interpret when someone is speaking. It is contrasted with I’d rather communicate one sentence than go off with a whole lot of gibberish which no one understands. (Which is often what we see today isn't it?).

1 Cor. 14:23-25 “Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind? But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.”

Paul puts an ungifted person (uninformed) with a charismatic in the same category. The people who have the gifts of the spirit should exhibit them in such a way so that the unsaved will become convicted and want to be saved and the ungifted will also want to desire the gifts to honor God. But when they see what goes on today it is the very opposite. We should pursue the gifts to be used but not have their usage obstruct the giver of the gifts.

1 Cor.14:33-34 “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.” (could be a reference to women in the assembly exercising gifts, speaking in tongues?) This is the rule of conduct for the churches.

1 Cor.14:37-40: “If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.” Paul admonishes the church that if some thinks of themselves as spiritual persons they will follow his instructions and act spiritual by obeying. This is a command from the Lord, not just his opinion. If not, he can continue to be without the right knowledge and continue exercising gifts and he is then unspiritual. “Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.

“God is a God of order not disorder, if the gifts are not practiced the way the Apostle Paul states then they are out of order."

Does praying build your spirit man up? Does reading the Bible strengthen your faith? Building yourself up is not a bad thing as your copy and paste article claims! Do you think it is wrong to build yourself up?
You need to read Acts 2 ans 10 and see what they were REALLY doing when they spoke in tongues!

Then maybe you can explain why in verse 13 it tells the speaker to pray for the interpretation?? If he knew himself what he was saying why would he have to pray for the interpretation??

Again, if he knows the language he is speaking, why would he have to pray for the interpretation? You do realize that Paul is speaking of how to pray in the spirit in the assembly? If it is done without the interpretation then it does not benefit the assembly!

    I agree with this!

    I agree with this!

    I agree with this!

You do realize that the interpretation is just as supernatural as tongues itself? I agree that in the assembly that without the interpretation if is of NO use to the congregation!

I agree that the speaker does not know the language he is speaking!

I have no problem with this!

I agree with Paul here, too!

I do not think Paul was calling one of the manifestations of the Holy Spirit gibberish! But he did say that he would rather speak in his own understanding IN CHURCH so all could benefit!

I do not have a problem with this! I was a little confused when you said "ungifted person/uninformed" with "a charismatic"! Was Paul referring to the Chrarismatic in that verse????

They were to keep silent because of the setting in the church then! They set separatly from their husbands! If women can prophesy with there head covered they can speak in tongues with the interpretation in church! Both are manifestations of the Holy Spirit!

I agree with order in the assembly!

2 Thess 2:9...The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,

the MOST important thing to realise in all of these passages was that it applied to the Apsotolic church age, NOT to us for today, as we now have the Bible and the HS speaking to us thru that for all that we need to become spiritually mature and complete!

You deny that trhe Bible is the full revelation from/iof God to us for today, and that the HS speaks to us thru that?
That the bible is enough to amke us mature and complete in christ?

I'm still waiting to hear what and who today's babbling benefits?

If it is only self edification that is WRONG...no where in the bible are we suppose to be self edified but to edify others. ALL GIFTS were given to edify the church.

I haven't met a charismatic yet who spoke on tongues who didn't sin abundantly...in sexual areas, mean spirited as they have a high esteem of themselves cause they think they are so special they have something others don't have...much like the immature Corinthians

I have yet to see (and I have been in a few of these churches..got saved by a pentecostal and have been friends with many) anyone ever INTERPRET their nonsense.

that alone make the gift a COUNTERFEIT!

No, again you can not prove the real false by pointing out there is false out there! Why don't you stick to scriptures to get your doctrine!
#1 God calls it tongues! Tongues is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit! So be careful how you degrade it! Even if it is out of ignorance!

#2 You have yet to address other post...so why should you expect anyone to interact with you?

Question: "What was the purpose of the biblical sign gifts?"

Answer: When we speak of the biblical sign gifts, we are referring to miracles like speaking in tongues, visions, healing, raising the dead, and prophesying. There is no question among believers whether or not they existed, for the Bible plainly describes them. Where disagreement arises among believers is their purpose, as well as the question of whether we should experience them today. Some say that these gifts are a sign of one's salvation, while others say they are a sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and yet others say their purpose is to authenticate the message of the gospel. How can we know the truth? We must search the Scriptures to find God's purpose statements about these things.

One of the earliest references to sign gifts in the Bible is found in Exodus 4, when Moses is being instructed by God about the impending deliverance from Egypt. Moses worried that the people would not believe that God sent him, so God gave him the signs of the rod becoming a snake and his hand becoming leprous. God said these signs were “that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you” (v. 5). If the people still did not believe, God told Moses to take water from the Nile and pour it on the ground, where it would turn to blood (v. 9). The purpose for the children of Israel was that they would believe God's messenger.

God also gave Moses miraculous signs to show Pharaoh, in order that he would let the people go. In Exodus 7:3-5, God told Moses that He would multiply His signs and wonders in Egypt, so “the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” God wanted the Egyptian people to know that He was the one working to deliver the Israelites. In Exodus 10:7, Moses told Pharaoh that the final plague, which would kill the firstborn, was to show that God distinguished between the Egyptians and the Israelites. The signs and wonders confirmed God's message to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, so they would know that Moses was sent by God.

When Elijah confronted the false prophets on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18), he prayed for God to miraculously send fire from heaven so the people would know “you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word....that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God” (v. 36-37). The miracles he and the other prophets performed were a confirmation that God had sent the prophets and that God was at work in Israel’s midst.

Joel was given a message of God's judgment on Israel, and within that message was a prophecy of mercy and hope. When the judgment came as prophesied, and the people responded with repentance, God said that He would then remove the judgments and restore His blessing: “You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame” (Joel 2:27). Immediately after that statement, God spoke about pouring His Spirit on the people, so they would prophesy, see visions, and see wonders happening. When the disciples began speaking in tongues on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-21), Peter declared, “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.” What was the purpose? That the people would know the message brought by Peter and the others was God's message.

Jesus' ministry was accompanied by various signs and wonders. What was the purpose of His miracles? In John 10:37-38, Jesus was responding to the Jews who wanted to stone Him for blasphemy, and He said, “If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." Just as in the Old Testament, the purpose of Jesus' miracles was to confirm God's hand on His Messenger.

When the Pharisees asked Jesus to show them a sign, Jesus said, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here” (Matthew 12:39-41). Jesus was very clear that the purpose of a sign was so people would acknowledge God's message and respond accordingly. Likewise, in John 4:48, He told the nobleman, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” The signs were a help to those who struggled to believe, but the message of salvation in Christ was the focus.

This message of salvation was outlined by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:21-23: “It pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.” Signs have their purpose, but they are a means to a greater end—the salvation of souls through the preaching of the gospel. In 1 Corinthians 14:22, Paul states clearly that “tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers.” God used miraculous signs like speaking in tongues to convince unbelievers that the message of Christ was true, but as the rest of the context shows, the more important thing was the clear declaration of the gospel message.

One thing that is often overlooked in discussions about signs and miracles is the timing and placement of them in the Scriptures. Contrary to popular belief, people in Bible times did not see miracles all the time. In fact, the miracles of the Bible are generally grouped around special events in God's dealing with mankind. Israel's deliverance from Egypt and entrance into the Promised Land were accompanied by many miracles, but the miracles faded away soon afterward. During the late kingdom years, when God was about to place the people in exile, He allowed some of His prophets to do miracles. When Jesus came to live among us, He did miracles, and in the early ministry of the apostles, they did miracles, but outside of those times, we see very few miracles or signs in the Bible. The vast majority of people who lived in Bible times never saw signs and wonders with their own eyes. They had to live by faith in what God had already revealed to them.

In the early church, the signs and wonders were primarily centered on the first presentation of the gospel among various people groups. On the day of Pentecost, we read that there were “Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven” gathered in Jerusalem (Acts 2:5). It was to these Jews, who had been raised in other lands and spoke those foreign languages (v. 6-11), that the sign of tongues was first given. They acknowledged that they were hearing in their native tongues about the wonderful works of God, and Peter told them that the only appropriate response was to repent of their sins (v. 38). When the gospel was first presented among the Samaritans, Philip did signs and wonders (Acts 8:13).

Again, when Peter was sent to Cornelius, a Gentile, God gave a miraculous sign to confirm His work. “And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God” (Acts 10:45-46). When Peter was questioned by the other apostles, he gave this as evidence of God's leading, and the others “glorified God, saying, ‘Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life’” (Acts 11:18).

In every instance, the sign gifts were a confirmation of God's message and messenger, in order that people might hear and believe. Once the message was confirmed, the signs faded away. We typically don't need those signs to be repeated in our lives, but we do need to receive the same gospel message.
