In my opinion the least significant thing in our church services is music yet it seems to be the thing that is the most controversal and in some instances has caused church splits. On the other hand The Word is the reason for the services and yet we will compromise the word much quicker then we will music or the type of music. My personal preferance is Hymns of the 19th and 20th century and Gaither Trio but my children with hardly an exception like CCM. I gladly concede and willing to compromise on the music but not the word. I certainly would not pay $40 for a ticket to CCM concert but have no problem with it in the church providing the Lyrics are scriptural.

    Good points...

....twenty some odd years ago, on a Sunday evening, my wife and I strolled into the Eagles Nest Fellowship in Santa Ana, CA. This was my first time in church since nearly ending my life with a bullit just two nights earlier.

This was a five-fold ministry church, and their music was not what I expected. In fact, not only was it composed of CCM, it was alife, vibrant and there were were ten or twelve ladies dancing and waving flags. Another thing about this music was that it went on without any kind of break for more than an hour.

Now understand me.....I was turned off with the music, at first, and wanted to leave, but the Holy Ghost seemed to send a huge angel to sit on my lap and hold me down. Within fifteen minutes of this non traditional worship and praise stuff, the angel stood up, and so did I, and when I did it wasn't to leave, but rather to PRAISE and WORSHIP God.

The longer the music went on the more engrossed and drawn into the service of praise I was. It was intense, and it led me to the place of surrendering my heart, ANGER, hate, death wish, and prodigal days. I came home that night, and I don't know if traditional hymns would have done it, because this music was different. It lifted up God in a way I'd never before heard, and it set the table for me to be asked to go forward for ministering later that evening. BTW - there was no spoken message that night. JUST MUSIC.

We attended Eagles Nest for a few more years, and there were a dozen times that I remember the pastor humbling himself and surrendering the entire service over to praise and worship, and the altars were always filled with hungry souls [three and four deep]. Keep in mind this church had no less than 2,000 people at every service. Pastor Gary was humbled to see people come forward - with a word being preached - to be saved, and to rid their hearts and souls of sin and burdens to deep to let go of prior to coming to that service.

So, what I've found in my years of churching is that it doesn't matter what genre of music is spoken in church, so long as it is spoken in the Holy Ghost. It is, after all, the Holy Ghost, who Jesus said was sent, to draw us to the Father.

Music is just one avenue in which God works to bless man and draw us closer to Him.

I love the hymns, dearly....and I love the new stuff just as much. But I always had a heart for every genre from Bach to Beethovan to the Beach Boys to the music God gives us! In fact my wife and I spent twenty-five years re-writing the words from the Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones, to Elvis to Ricky Nelson, to the Eagles to chuck Berry to you name it, and performing those songs all over sourthern California! And people were blessed, and more importantly, the alters were never empty after a concert and personal testimony.......

    Shalom!!!!

I really do get what you'e saying, but consider this: "{A Psalm of praise.} Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing." (Psalm 100:2)

My opinion is this: Singing is a necessary part of our corporate worship services. It is vitally important, but it is not less important or more important than every other necessary element of corporate worship.

What are the necessary elements of corporate worship - perhaps that question should be saved for another thread.

I often say "The time that Baptists lie the most is when we sing"

IMHO, much (not all) of CCM is the music-and not the words. Folks get into the music - tend to get all emotional ......

and the constant repetition of lyrics......

On Sunday mornings at our church, we typically have 7-9 places where songs are sung. There is a variety of song styles used during that time. The word gets the majority of our time together, as it should. Our morning worship starts at 11am and is usually over by 12-ish. The music dude is pretty good about moving things along or cutting a song or two to give the pastor the pulpit by 11:25.

The pianist and I have decided we are going to change some of the names of the hymns so everyone can sing them honestly. Here are a few:

    I Surrender Most of It
Wherever He Leads I'll Think About It
Take Their Life, Lead Them, Lord
    Have My Own Way, Lord
Jesus Is Lord of Someone Else
I Have Decided to Think About Following Jesus
    Standing on the Premises
I Love Thee, When It Suits Me
Jesus Is a Name I Know
    His Name Is Okay
He Leadeth You! O Blessed Thought
Serve the Lord when you can
Lord I Want to Be a Christian on Sundays
God Isn't Going To Make A Way
    He's Your Peace
He Touched Me, But I Wasn't Paying Attention
Here I Am to Watch Others Worship
    Holy Spirit, Thou Aren't Welcome
Let's Just Praise the Lord Some Other Time
Lord I Left Your Name At Home
    O Wooden Cross
    Shout At the Lord
The Heart of What's for Lunch
Let Someone Else Think About His Love
Your Are Somewhat My All in All

I agree this is a difficulty, but emotionalism is not confined to CCM.

"He speaks and the sound of His voice is so sweet, the birds hush their singing?"

"When we all get to heaven" - not all that say, "Lord, lord..."

And don't get me started on the emotionalism of southern gospel!

Yes. Just like those old hymns repeating a chorus over and over. Sometimes 4-5 times in a row! That repetition of lyrics stuff...

Speaking of tending to get emotional I've witnessed people shedding a tear or two over 'The Old Rugged Cross' and 'It is Well with My Soul'.

Gib, you hit the nail on the head!

You may have just given me an inspiration for a message! :type: Seriously :saint:

Fully agree - but I would say it tends to be more prevalent in the upbeat CCM

Now, don't go messing with my SG

You mean singing all 5 stanzas of "Just As I Am" at least 3 times until someone comes forward?

Given the option, I would almost almost ALWAYS prefer CCM over singing the old hymns.

Its not the forties/fifties/ any more. :wavey:

(The reason I said "almost" is because if Rap or Heavy metal are on the menu I am out in the parking lot pronto!
