Doing a Dissertation?

Paul just graduated from SEBTS with his PhD in NT Greek linguistics under Dr. David Alan Black.

 

Thanks, Bob, we're very proud of him. Now he just needs a teaching position.

 

So true. Paul has already sent out dozens of resumes, but only had a couple of phone interviews--though his alma mater did have him down to the last two candidates a couple of years ago.

No kidding. I've gained a real appreciation for the dissertation process watching Paul go through it. Much kudos to those of you who have done it.

Paul's advisor has said he should re-write it this summer and prepare it for publication. More fun! (Dr. Black says he should learn Latin for that instead of depending on others' translations. (Hey, what's one more language!)

After looking at all possible 1st century sources (the first time this has been done), he concluded that foreknowledge does not include any aspect of predetermination in its 1st century usage. His understanding of the word in 1 Peter then is that in that passage Peter is not speaking of how God foreknew salvation, but of how He foreknew the situation of the paroikoi, those scattered abroad, in their social situation and persecution. This conclusion is apart from any consideration of the Cal/Arm debate, which he did not discuss in the dissertation.
