D-Day

    Today marks the 69th anniversary of D-Day at Normandy. Over 160,000 men from the US, Great Britain, and Canada stormed the beaches.

    Had the Allies failed that day - History would have drastically been changed.

    Some 4,000 Allied troops died, and some 10,000 were wounded.

    There were 19 U.S. Division which landed.
    At one time or another I was assigned/attached to three of them:
    2nd Armored, 4th Infantry, 8th Infantry.

    The other divisions were:
    Infantry:
    1, 2, 5, 9, 28, 29, 30, 35, 79, 83, 90

    Armor 3, 4, 6

    Airborne 82, 101

    While many focus on D-Day and the consolidation of the beach heads, I think of the farm boy tank mechanics. These enlisted men devised the 'dozer blades that were welded onto the tanks allowing them to break through the Norman hedgerows. I view this an only in the American Army action. IMNHO, in other armies such a development would be made by a bunch of bofins somewhere at the homefront or an officer. It would not be made by (the following is entirely fictional) SSGT. Zeke Willobee's crew taking hunk a steel cutting some teeth into it and welding same onto a Sherman.

    Something to speculate on.....how would the ww2 panned out if the USA ENTERED the war to support the allies sooner than Dec. 8 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour?

    Without a rally cry (remember Pearl Harbor), there would not have been the nation wide support needed. Many Americans were still in an isolation mode - some actually wanted us to enter the war on the side of the Axis- this mainly from the large German population of Pennsylvania and the Mid-West.

    Ike has written a "Failure Notice" had the invasion been thrown back into the sea---which---I believe included his resignation

    Many people view D-Day as the day the American's actually invaded the mainland of Europe---when in all actuality--the Americans had been in Italy fighting up the boot for quiet some time

    Absolutely correct. According to Wiki - the invasion of Italy occurred 3 Sep 43
