Not only is plagiarism strictly against Baptist Board rules, in the strict sense of the word, it is against American and state laws. It happens quite often here, I suppose for the purpose of a poster exhibiting knowledge about a doctrine that he or she knows nothing about. It only takes a few keystrokes to cite a source.

It is easy to prove. When a post appears that seems out of character for the poster, all one has to do is google the phrase or sentence, and more often than not, it will lead one to a website that is a paper or study written by a credible person.

It seems to me this is a more serious offense than all of the back and forth that has been the subject of much debate as of late.

What is your opinion of plagiarism, and what do you think the penalty should be? In a sense, it is stealing knowledge one does not have, just like cheating on a test in school.

It is not necessary unless one is trying to look better than they otherwise could. Sometimes though I think we all have accidentally forgot to post the link even though we intended to.

There's no dishonesty in quoting someone while giving them credit. Passing off another's ideas and words as one's own is lying.

    Completely Unnecessary...!

Plagiarism is completely unnecessary and unjustified. There is no viable excuse for resorting to it and any poster who does should be suspended for a set time period at the LEAST or banned completely if there are proven repeat offenses. There are definite restrictions on the BB about the use of copyrighted material which bear easy resemblance to the matter of plagiarism as well.
I can remember a thread I started not too long ago where I desired to use an article written by David Cloud as the basis for the thread. I took the time to contact him personally and secure his permission to post the article in it's entirety before doing so out of respect for his work and also out of respect for the Baptist Board rules. Frankly, there is no excuse for plagiarism whatsoever. It requires little or no effort to post either a link to something that one hasn't written themselves or afix a reference giving proper credit to the one who has written it on anything we post.

The bottom line is....drumroll please..... the word "plagiarism" is a fancy $10 word for L Y I N G....nothing more or less in the final analysis. Carry on.

The greatest compliment one can receive is to be copied by someone else.

The embarrassment always falls upon one who does the copy.

I wish someone would embarrass them self by copying me!

No wait, that would be an embarrassment to me because usually the copy is to soundly disprove in highly disapproving words what I thought would be approved.

Therefore, please - no body copy this!

It would embarrass me - and probably you, too!!! :)

If BB dialogue were in 'real time' there would be 'vast' periods of silence in between posts.

There is also too many pastors plagiarizing the sermons of others.

If anyone ever felt like they want to plagiarize mine they are welcome to them. If I get anything right it came from the Lord so I have no claim. And If I get it wrong I don't want anyone to know it came from me anyway.

That's a good point, but two things I would ask is, is it plagiarism or is it a pre-purchased sermon? If so, that's kind of plagiarism-ish, but not really.

Or is it an illustration that's just been passed around?

I mean, if I say, "...and the reason they were called Sadducees is that they didn't believe in the resurrection and that made them sad, you see", I'm sure somebody, somewhere was the first to come up with that, but it's passed into common usage now, so is it really plagiarism?

    Not EVERYBODY dislikes it...

I can remember the late Dr. Harold B.Sightler telling a group of young preachers ar a preachers conference to feel free to copy anything they heard him say anytime if it was useful and a blessing to them.....He went on to say that was why he went to preachers conferences. To Preach....and to get material for future sermons. He said it all belongs to the Lord if it is consecrated to HIS use!

    Hummmm...isn't THAT interesting.

No, I mean going to a site like sermon central and using as our own. I am also talking about using an illustration as if it happened to us.

I see. So then, that message I preached last week, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, I probably shouldn't have done that.

In all fairness to me, though, I didn't take credit for the Bible verses.

No, the closest I ever came to knowingly plagiarizing something was using a sermon title from Russell Moore: "You're So Vain You Probably Think This Psalm is About You".

Hadn't heard that one. Russell Moore is a good guy! And I'm so stealing that one.
