AV1611 Alert!

    I wanted to pass along to everyone what I found recently:

    I went in to the local Ollie's and found a few copies of the 1611 King James Version and New King James Version 400th Anniversary Boxed Set. It is a very good reproduction that was done by Nelson Publishers in 2011 to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Authorised Version.

    Though I have had one for years, I couldn't resist buying it - for $29.99!!!

    I have a few questions about the AV 1611 copy in that set, if you will:

    1.) Does it include a repro of the original title page?

    2.) Does it include the marginal notes?

    3.) What font is the print?

    4.) Does it include all the extratextual material, such as the preface, "Easter-Finder", etc?

    Does it have the Apocrypha?

    Does it have the Preface by Miles Smith (though his name doesn't appear)?

    In that order:
    1. I think so.
    2. Yes.
    3. It is not the gothic font like my other one - not sure what you would call it. It is the same font as my Geneva Bible reproduction.
    4. If you are referring to the preface that starts with "To the most high and mightie Prince, Iames" and "The Translators to the reader" then yes.

    Point worth noting: the AV1611 - the REAL King James Bible - contains the Apocrypha. This might not be for some people.

    I still have the 1982 edition of the 1611 KJV/NKJV slip cased set.

    I wonder how many of the ardent KJV 1611 advocates would actually feel right at home using the KJV (Apocrypha & all) that's in this set.

    Thanx for your answers!

    I think that if more KJVOs CAREFULLY read the AV 1611 cover-to-cover, including all the extratextual material and marginal notes, there'd be somewhat fewer KJVOs, a lot more FORMER KJVOs.

    For some, yes. But I have interacted with some KJVO's who honestly believe it is the ONLY version of the Word of God. With them, I think they will refuse to accept any evidence that might point to the contrary.

    I was in the neighborhood today, and there are only a few left. Ollie's is running a sale this week so it would be $29.99 less a 15% discount.

    You're right. I, and others, have posted such evidence right here in this forum, and most of the KJVOs here simply ignore it.

    There's an Ollie's not far from me, in Barboursville, WV. I might check it out.

    BTW, I have a repro AV 1611 with all the extratextual material in it, and dupes the orignal, except that it's physically smaller, and in Roman font. It's printed by Hendrickson Publishing; I got it at Wal-Mart for $30. it is stand-alone, not packaged with anything else. Best $30 I've ever spent!

    I get the impression you love the AV as much as I do, which is why I find KJVOnlyism so peculiar. I love it as much as I love the NKJV and the HCSB, but

    Ah, Barboursville - you're in the other Virginia! It's always fun to get off Interstate 64 to drive the Midland Trail and marvel at God's Creation.

    I will be driving through your city next Thursday night on my way to St. Louis. I will be sure to wave as I drive through!!

    That is the one I have, I think. It is smaller so I can take it with me to church without looking like some sort of holyroller - walking into the service with an enormous Bible! :laugh:

    I believe we are blessed in having both the older English translations( From Wycliffe's to the KJV) before us, as well as modern ones in OUR language style.

    Actually, I'm in Lawrence Co. Ohio, across the creek from Huntington, WV. THAT Virginia was on the WINNING side 148 years ago.

    I measured my H. copy at 8.5" X 5.5". I believe the original AV 1611 was like 10" X 8", in that vicinity, judging from the only one I was privileged enough to hold and look through a little. Maybe Dr. Bob or someone else here knows the size of the original.

    I believe the "Great Bible", the first 'authorized' English version, (Commanded to be made by Henry VIII) is something like 14" X 12", but it was intended as a pulpit edition, usually mounted on a lectern in a church sanctuary, left open, with the page being turned each day. It would be a beast to carry around!

    The KJV first edition was folio edition, roughly 17½x12.

    The first quarto (1612/1613) was roughly 6½x8½.
