Small, exclusive groups are not uncommon in church, but these groups can often be divisive and detrimental to the growth and fellowship within the church!

    So what say you?

As small as our Church is, there'd better not be a clique!

We have 3 exclusive groups in our church. Whether your a long time member or a visitor, you will fall into 1 or the other. Some flip flop back and forth. The majority don't.

We have those that sit on the left and those that sit on the right. Many of those have sat on their side the entire 12 years I've been there.

The 3rd group comes to the night services and they all sit on the right side. I don't understand why the right side. Maybe because the piano is on the right side, I dunno.

I tried to start my own little clique after 12 years and went to the left side on a Sunday night. I got many raised eyebrows that night. I must have done something right, or wrong, depending on how you look at it, because now, the preacher's whole family and several youth are now sitting on the left side during the Sunday night service. We don't want cause any trouble. We just want to sit on the left side and be left alone.

Now that you mention it...we got this quire loft that all the rabble, malcontents, beer drinkers &hell raisers congregate. There you could wear sandals...I even walked in one day wearing sweat pants which was incredibly liberating!

Sad to say, there are at least three cliques in the church where I pastor:

    1) A former pastor to this church is a member - he and all who support him.

    2) Those who think their actions support me in the ministry.

    3) A group of families whose kids all participate in the same leagues all year round.

In the beginning of my time, the first two were very divisive - sad to say that in my maturing as a new pastor, I played my part too. Now it's not so bad - and only rarely does overt division occur. These are mostly a difference of opinion re: the way he did things and the way I lead. Just technique, not theology.

Now the third group, I'm working on getting a couple of informants - just so I know when the sports events occur. This group just loves their commonality, and I see no problem with it - but I need to know when the games are!
