My husband and I were baptized, by immersion in February 1994 in a CMA church, just a few months after we were saved.

In 1995 we moved across country and joined a Christian church. Due to various issues we felt led to leave that church in 2012. (They teach baptismal regeneration and we disagree with that doctrine.)

We started attending a Southern Baptist church. A few months ago we went forward and asked for membership. The pastor and the church accepted us as members. The church secretary asked us to fill out a card. On that card we were asked what church we were baptized in, how we were baptized and what church we were coming from. When the pastor found out that we were not baptized in a Baptist church he said that we'd need to be baptized again before we could become members.

Is this common for Southern Baptist churches?

We did get baptized again, but we're not sure we did the right thing. We did it to keep harmony in the church, not because we felt it was the Biblical thing to do.

    Hello Roberta,

I am certain you two are struggling over this decision but I wouldn't allow such an foothold over a past decision.

That said, I'd keep it simple and accept the fact that you've submitted to baptism to join the church, leave it at that, forget the past and move forward.

Is this a common thing for the SBC to do?

Since each SBC church is independent - it might be hard to say. % wise, I don't think its high. Personally, to the best of my knowledge, I have never been a member of a SBC that required re-baptism for someone that was not baptized as a Baptist or SB.

It is not common to ask someone who has been baptized by immersion to be re-baptized. but it has not hurt anything that you have done it again. I would just let it go.

Absolutely not! The pastor at my new church makes it very clear that Baptism is not necessary for salvation.

Now the church that we left taught baptismal regeneration which teaches that baptism is necessary for salvation. That was one of the reasons that we left that church.

Is that the reasons he asked you to re-baptize?

Convention bureaucrat Ed Stetzer surveyed the denomination's pastors on this issue in 2008:

    http://www.christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2008/september/research-on-beliefs-of-sbc-pastors.html

"Pastors were also asked about their church's practice of receiving members who were baptized in other churches. The question was, "Our church admits people into membership of our church who have been sprinkled or baptized in the following ways (without requiring baptism in OUR local church)."

A full 92 percent of Southern Baptist pastors said they would not require baptism of new members who were immersed after conversion in another church that has the same beliefs as a Southern Baptist church.
If the candidate for membership had been immersed after conversion in another Southern Baptist church, 84 percent of Southern Baptist pastors said they would not require baptism.
If the prospective new member had been immersed after conversion in another church that does not believe in eternal security, 26 percent of Southern Baptist pastors said they would not require baptism.
If the prospective new member had been immersed after conversion in a church that believes baptism is required for salvation, 13 percent of Southern Baptist pastors said they would not require baptism.
If the prospective new member had been baptized by sprinkling or pouring after conversion, 3 percent of Southern Baptist pastors said they would not require baptism prior to admittance into membership.
If the prospective new member had been baptized as an infant by sprinkling, pouring or immersion, 1 percent of Southern Baptist pastors said they would not require baptism."
