I was watching a history channel show today, and it struck me that America and Rome have a lot in common. We all recognize this to be true; however, there is one glaring difference between Rome, right before their fall, and the USA today.

That glaring, in-your-face difference is that while in Rome, Christianity was on the rise, replacing Paganism; clearly, here in the US, and all over the West, Pagan like worship and social ills are gradually increasing while the influence of Christianity is on the decline!

Do you see this too? :tear:

And Rome followed the Greeks which followed the Persians.... You get the picture.

Educator and writer Edith Hamilton wrote. "When the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again."

Great societies die from within. We dabble with the divine and profane often mixing the two and blur the distinction. We push the boundaries of morality and vice until it bursts and blame someone else for the consequences. By the time the enemy is at the gate we've become consummately self-absorbed and incapable of self-defense. Our beloved US of A is merely following a pattern established thousands of years ago.

It is nothing exceptional. It is just our turn.

What you say is the inescapable truth.

But we are so full of arrogance, Christians and churches included, that we somehow believe ourselves to be exempt and above the inevitable.

And we moan and cry and wring our hands, but do nothing.

Yes, just as any Kingdom not led by the real King is doomed to ruin.
