Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists.

"This is something that those who voted in Congress are going to have to live with," Paul told The Cable on Thursday. "The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?"

As the official Egyptian death toll climbs to 638, the legislation the Kentucky libertarian is referring to was an amendment to suspend aid to Egypt until the country holds free and fair elections. Two weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats rejected it by an overwhelming 86-13 vote -- and top lawmakers in both parties protested it loudly.

"This amendment may be good politics, but it is bad policy," Sen. Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said at the time.

"It would be a terrific mistake for the United States to send a message to Egypt: you're on your own," Republican Senator John McCain added back then. "I urge my colleagues to vote to table the Paul amendment."

    CONTINUE . . .

Okay so we have to supply money and weapons to Al Qeada and the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria so they can liberate Syria from Al Assad because he uses the military to "kill his own people" and we have to supply money and weapons to the Egyptian military so they can kill their own people. At the same time.

    Washington has gone insane.

Morsi is a Muslim Brotherhood guy. right? Wonder how our Muslim Brotherhood allies in Syria who receive bullets and supplies from the USA are taking the news that the bullets and tanks being used against their Egyptian brothers are also paid for by the USA?

Nothing like a good old fashion interventionist foreign policy. There's never a dull (or peaceful ) moment.

If it were not for the Egyptian military, Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood would have instituted a Taliban government in Cairo and tens of thousands of Egyptians would have been murdered. The Egyptian army is determined to drive the Muslim Brotherhood out of Egypt once and for all. The White House is correct on this one.

John McCain, Lindsay Graham, and Rand Paul are wrong.

I have a lot of respect for Rand Paul. My only concern is his possible isolationist view.
On Egypt I would point out it was President Obama who supported the over throw of the last leader and supported the so called democratic vote in of the Muslim brotherhood. Now he is opposing the overthrow of the Muslim brotherhood.

I'm trying to imagine what a Rand Paul "isolationist" foreign policy might be like. I imagine he'd cut off military aid to Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. I doubt that would make him any friends in Washington or the corporate press. Just when the government and special interests are able to openly fund and arm both sides in a conflict and reap huge profits from it here comes some uppity "isolationist" that threatens those big rewards.

Naw that wouldn't go over at all.

The only people in danger of a Rand Paul non interventionist foreign policy are those who have become accustomed to the huge profits from chaos and global warfare. Not the American people who end up paying for all of it in blood and treasure plus interest.

Would someone explain why Ron and Rand Paul are against foreign aid?

Personally, I have decided that foreign aid is more about subsidies to American corporations than it is about the countries that receive the foreign aid.

You have to define foreign aid, Poncho. I think it excludes military aid. I think it should be mostly technical assistance and disaster relief with only modest amounts of capital investment. However, during the cold war it was just another means to compete with communism and contain communism behind the iron curtain. It is hard to be against food relief in my opinion although some on this board are against it. The State Department has always been considered inept.

In the case of Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood never got control of the military and the Muslim Brotherhood are the ones getting slaughtered in Egypt. Personally, I think that they have it coming for their attacks on the Egyptian Christians. I don't know what McCain and Graham are talking about and I think that libertarians should realize that the new war is defense against Islam.

If I had to define "foreign aid" I'd call it a form of international socialism. An un constitutional form of international socialism.

But who cares about following the constitution these days right?

Do you suppose maybe we got something coming for doing nothing while Washington funds and arms those who murder Christians? You do understand Washington has been funding and arming the MB and Al Qeada in Syria right?

Yes, I agree with you about what Obama did in Egypt in support of the Muslim Brotherhood and how he is trying to bring down Asaad in Syria even though it will cost the lives of the Christians there. Obama is clearly on the side of those causing the worldwide Christian holocaust.

As for the issue of foreign aid, I think that the program is just hopelessly corrupt because it is tied to American politics which is a pork barrel system of you vote for this for my district and I will vote for that for your district and the taxpayers will have to pay the bill for both districts because they made the mistake of voting for us.

I usually agree with you on politics, but you are way off base about Rand Paul, a senator from my state. The point is, the United States should not be supporting one group or another in Egypt. The country should not be getting one cent of American tax money. Let them solve their own internal affairs or go up in smoke doing so. Now, if you want to criticize a senator from Kentucky, try Mitch McConnell, a RINO. He is a man without a rudder, and is driven by the wind. He is a liberal, big spender. His only goal is to increase his power and enrich his bank accounts. It is my sincere hope he is booted out office next year, either in the primary or general election, and frankly, I do not care if it is the most liberal Democrat on the block.

Why should we give Egypt and Israel American tax money not to fight each other? Does Egypt give us money not to fight Russia or Red China?

Okay, I like Sen. Paul but I disagree with him on this issue. He certainly has more gumption than our Senator Dan Coats (R-IN), whom I have shook hands with. As you know we finally dumped Lugar in the primaries but lost the election to the Democrats for the other Hoosier senatorial seat. I know that Sen. McConnell is so-so, but he is a Kentuckian and they are good people. If the GOP fails to win the Senate in 2014, he probably will lose as minority leader.

On the issue of Egypt, I think that a static defense of the USA is bad. The Egyptian military has always been our ally and Mubarak was a friendly dictator but he never lifted a finger for the Copts.

The Arabs are supplicants. It seems as if Egypt would still have good agriculture since they have the Nile for water. Yet we have been feeding them since Carter. Appearances are not reality in the orient and so Egypt has been a longtime ally of sorts.

Obama's error was in abandoning the status quo in Egypt and thinking that the Muslim Brotherhood could now be trusted. Obama is naïve. The Egyptian military is justified in driving the MB out of existence. Obama made the same mistake in Libya and now is making the same mistake in Syria. Don't look for any changes until the Democrats lose the White House.

I am sure that you are wondering if the Chinese would be lending us money for our foreign adventures if we were not aiding them in containing Islam, a threat to China as she seeks to rule the world?

In general, I would like to see the Persian atomic program destroyed as a setback to China's intentions in South America. Then I would like to ask Israel why they cannot fund their own military. I would ask the Saudis, Jordan, and Egypt to help check the Persians and to use Saudi money instead of ours. As for the Palestinians, I would tell them that we are not going to support their occupation of the Gaza anymore.

Egypt was our ally against the Germans and was the frontline in keeping Rommel from Arab oil.

    :thumbs::thumbs: Agree with you
    1st intervention in Egypt...Bad
    intervention in Libya ....Bad
Egyptian military overthrow of Morsi Regime....good
U.S. support of Egyptian Military intervention....good.

Obama should have never intervened against Mubarak to begin with. But the fact that the Egyptian military is ousting Morsi is a good thing.

I like Rand too, but he is lumping ALL foreign policy intervention into the same category. The Egyptian military is cleaning up the mistakes we made in the first place. Some support of them would not necessarily be a bad thing. Problem is....Obama regime would have to admit that they erred when they ousted Mubarrak in the first place, and that won't happen. Obama is simply on the side of radical Islamists wherever they are.
