Al Jazeera cable news network is starting up in the U.S. this week.

“It’s going to be fact-based and unbiased, with less opinion, less yelling and fewer celebrity sightings” than the likes of CNN, MSNBC and Fox News, said Al Jazeera America’s CEO Ehab Al Shihabi.

The fledgling network has hired nearly 1,000 employees, including CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and Ali Velshi, ABC’s Antonio Mora and NBC’s Michael Viqueira.

Perhaps most impressive is the recruitment of Kate O’Brian, a longtime ABC News executive, as president. “Our programming will be what Americans want to know and what we think they need to know,” O’Brien said. “We’re going to stay away from pundits, crazy celebrity news and the more traditional cable fare of sitting in on trials for days on end.”

Fewer ads, longer stories. It spent $500 million in January to buy Al Gore’s Current TV channel. Because it is subsidized by one of the world’s wealthiest countries, it can afford to air fewer commercials. A typical hour will feature six minutes of ads, compared with 15 to 17 minutes on other cable news outlets.

    So, would you watch it?

I'd like to see what kind of news a former ABC president thinks Americans want to see, especialy so soon after congress has just voted to allow certain "government agencies" to openly propagandize the American people.

    Google it.

I barely have time to listen to our own propaganda. How would I find time to listen to theirs?

    ^^ That, right there ^^

Also, I got a chuckle out of their "decision" to only have 6 or 7 minutes of commercials per hour. Reality is more like they can't attract advertisers.

I might watch it a couple times out of morbid curiosity.

Al-jazeera america's lead story focuses on terrorist detainees

Al Jazeera America's slogan is: "There's more to it." The Qatari government-owned channel clearly wants viewers to look past its sensational coverage of anti-American terrorists, its ongoing use as a mouthpiece for Jew-hatred, and its growing alienation from Arab journalists and viewers disgusted with its support for the Muslim Brotherhood. Its lead story on the first day of its launch, however, sends the opposite message.
Entitled "Malaria drug overused on Guantanamo Bay prisoners?", the article by Jason Leopold reports that terror detainees at the controversial prison may have suffered from overdoses of an anti-malarial drug that was given to them as they arrived. That's right: because the military acted to save their lives and prevent the potential spread of infection, using a drug with (yes) potential side effects, human rights groups are outraged.

Al jazeera america guest blames egyptian military for bombing churches

...Ahmed Bedier, the activist from Florida, said while it was "horrible" that churches were being bombed, "not a single Christian" has been killed as a result of what he claimed were just 40 bombings (reports haveindicated at least 60 churches have been targeted by the Muslim Brotherhood and supporters).
Wael Escander, a blogger and online journalist in Egypt who joined the program via Google Hangout, said that five were killed and noted that the "houses of Christians" have been marked weeks before the attacks.
Bedier got defensive, saying the security forces "allowed" those bombings to happen to gain the "sympathies of the west" and "blame it on the Muslim Brotherhood."

I don't think you have to worry about AJ-America being a threat boys and girls. I know the idea of of opposing viewpoints is scary, but unless they soft peddle their news coverage for the American consumer with which sports star is shacking up with which movie star and images of half n@ked celebrities showing of which parts of their bodes have been surgically enhanced and stories about 'how to really please your partner' it will never survive the American news market.

Here is the kind of news a successful news source must run. I can't see AJA running them, but maybe?

(All from a prominent self-proclaimed 'unbiased' news website)

    David Cassidy Busted for DWI

    Lindsay Lays Egg on Oprah

    Gruesome Gia Suicide Details

    Klum Can't Keep Clothes On

    Why You Should Stop Dieting

    Danica Shoots Risque Video

Weiner Sext Pal Turns to P0rn

    Burger Dislocates Jaw

    Cher's Back in Business

No, I won't be watching AJA - I don't have cable and doubt anyone here would carry AJA on their cable service anyway.

Apologies. I was not precise in my wording. The actual claim is 'fair and balanced.'

Fair and balanced is quite a difference from unbiased. Not sure how you got those two things confused. That's right it is. Unlike others they provide both sides of the issues. And trying to compare Them to Fox is absurd. They support terrorism.

No comparison intended. Just to point out that unless AJA is as salacious as sources like Fox there is nothing to fear - they won't make it 'No one' in the US will watch it.

And 'Klum can't keep her clothes on' is not salacious?
