Chess pie and pie-eating contests

    I got conned into participating in a “pie eating contest.” Came in second (kept looking up to see how my 10 year son was doing – didn’t have to con him, he was a willing participant). Anyway, they used chess pie (which, until today was my favorite). After the contest, and riding several rides with my son at the fair, I’m not feeling well at all.

    My advice is, if you are going to have a pie eating contest, for the sake of those participating choose a lighter pie – not chess and I wouldn’t recommend pecan either (although these are far less messy).

    We are doing a fall festival in October. We are doing a coolwhip & gummie bear pie.

    A chess pie is:
    A lot of sugar and brown sugar, about 5 eggs, whipping cream and a ton of butter. Covers all the major food groups :smilewinkgrin:.

    Reminds me of a real sweet custard pie (but much more dense - more sugar than egg).

    In Alabama it always included cornmeal.

    My favourite name origin story is the 'jes pie' one :)
