I was having a discussion about requiring those who want to vote to be required to have a photo ID.

Here was the response: "The deal is.. I need a photo ID to buy alcohol or drive a car. What is the reason voters can't do the same? This Constitutional crap is so lame..."

Why waste my time in replying? And we wonder how some conservatives think.....

It's a hypothetical conversation based on arguments made for voter photo ID laws.

Common sense does not necessarily apply to constitutional rights. Voting is a constitutionally protected right. Why do conservatives want to create another government program to regulate a constitutional right?

Gun ownership is also a constitutionally protected right. Yet conservatives are zealous about defeating any regulation of it. Are some constitutional rights more constitutional than others?

Well, I am surprised you would post something like that. Voter ID laws have been held up as constitutional by the US SC.

Strawman argument that you continually make and gets debunked every time.

NO one who is for less regulation with regards to gun rights is against having to show a legitimate ID to purchase one.

I'd be careful of using "no one" when describing gun rights advocates and showing ID. What about sales at gun shows? Does everyone that attends these agree that a photo ID needs to be shown?

A quite sensible viewpoint, if you ask me. If we're going to make people prove they're old enough to buy booze, why do we think it odd for them to prove they're a legal voter?

You're not helping the liberal cause there, ITL. As though that were possible ...

Because buying booze is not a constitutional right, but voting is. Also, you do have to prove you are a legal voter in order to register to vote, so that's already covered.

I fail to understand this logic. So what? How does buying booze become more important than voting so much so that we should use ID to prove something about us but because voting is a constitutional right we should not have to prove who we are?

And this proves our point. If someone cannot show who they are at the polls how are they able to show who they are when they register? Obviously if they can't show who they are at the booth then there is no way they have even registered and are therefore now trying to vote illegally.

And how is the poll judge to know that the person standing in front of him/her is the same person who registered to vote?

Not sure how its done in other states but in Minnesota the poll judge asks your name and your address and you are required to sign the voting rolls. Minnesota leads the nation in voter participation.

The voting process assumes innocence until/unless proven guilty, that is, the government assumes you are a legal voter.

Please tell me how many times a person has claimed to be a person they were not and has actually cast a vote and committed voter fraud. I want actual voter fraud, not attempted voter registration fraud.

That is a stupid argument. The issue is not about guilt or innocents. Requiring an id to vote, drive, enlist in the military etc is never about guilt or innocents.

Requiring to have a photo ID to vote is an infringement of the constitutional right to vote. It is regulation of a constitutional right.

We've had this debate before. How would gun owners like it if they were magazines were limited to 9 rounds? Or if they had to have trigger locks in place at all times when gun was not in use?

How do they do it in your state? In Minnesota we have to state our name and address and sign on the voter registration rolls.

Not necessarily. The voter could have recently moved and hasn't re-registererd. Or the voter could be a student away at college. A photo ID is not going to help these people vote. In Minnesota you can bring a copy of your utility bills to show residency and also a neighbor that will vouch for your address.

Really? Why do (mostly) Republicans want photo ID voter laws? To prevent voter fraud! That is an assumption of guilt.

Is there an assumption of guilt when you are asked by law enforcement for your drivers license and insurance? Seriously, that is just dumb.

Of course there is an assumption of guilt. Why else would a policeman be pulling you over?
