Ecclesiastes 5:17 says, "And indeed all his days are in darkness, and in mourning, and [much rage*], and sickness, and bitter anger*" (Pool, 1996).

*The two Greek words here can be translated to mean "a state of intense displeasure", "intense expression of the inner self, [frequently] expressed as strong desire" (Danker & Bauer, 2000, "θυμός"), and "a substance with an unpleasant taste" (Danker & Bauer, 2000, "χολή"), instead of "rage" and "bitter anger".

So that it would read, "And indeed all his days are in darkness, and in mourning, and [much intense displeasure], and sickness, and [an unpleasant taste]" (Pool, 1996).

Is this the way that all men feel deep down inside and everyone is just trying to deny it?

Is this the way that all Christians feel deep down inside and they are just trying to deny it?

Is this an inevitable disposition of mankind?

This is natural man. This is the kind of man who is endowed only with a carnal mind which is at enmity with God and is not subject unto the laws of God neither indeed can it be. This is depraved man who it can be said of "There is no peace saith the Lord unto the wicked."

The Christian deals with this as well in this sense- he still battles the "old man"- his old self with its misery and misery-making ways.

Hm. Thanks for this Luke. Didn't think of that.

Do you think that Christians can't have this disposition and be walking in the spirit at the same time then?

I think walking in the Spirit can cause this disposition due to the nature of the world in which we walk and the nature within us with which we struggle.
