I have worn hearing aid for several years and after a recent visit with my audiologist have been discussing cochlear implants vs hearing aids with my family. I was told by my audiologist that implants were only for persons totally or near totally deaf (her job is to sell aids not implants).
I know nothing will replace the original equipment and I have no problem with hearing (Volume) with my present hearing aids, it is the understanding and clearness. I would like your comments if you have any experience with hearing implants

OK - So she said that most likely implants is not the way for you to go. Implants will give you a computer "robotic" kind of a sound and if you are able to hear well enough with the aids, that is the better choice. Implants would really be if you had no hearing at all and it is the choice between nothing or computer sounding voices - but it sounds like you can hear but maybe just need to look into some different technology for your aids. There are some great new products out there that are really revolutionizing hearing aids.

Here is her response to my C&P email:

"Does he know what caused his hearing loss? What kind of hearing aids is he using? Different hearing aids have different benefits. Also, I am guessing he has sensorineural hearing loss (meaning somewhere from the cochlea to the brain) if they are discussing implants. Has he had the different tests to see if the 8th cranial (auditory) nerve is functioning properly? If not, get those tests done! The implant won't help if his problem is on the nerve running to the brain or the brain itself."
