What do you consider to be the best study bible, and why?

Been using this for 20 years. Best study Bible I've ever come across, and I own a few of them in various translations.

The one that gets used regularly

 

I'm not a fan of Study Bibles. But right now I'm using an NLT Life Application Study Bible that I was given and it's pretty good. The notes in the various sections are all by different people so it's not like a "one man" commentary.

"One man" commentaries (MacArthur's, etc.) are fine but not my cuppa tea.

 

Here we go with the "KJV" comments. I simply answered the question as honestly as I could. I also own a NKJV study Bible, an NIV, and an ESV. The KJV has the most information, insight, historical setting information, Jewish custom information, Biblical character bios, maps, etc. Much more than any other study Bible I've seen. The notes are definitely conservative Baptist, however. And it has NOTHING to do with it being a KJV. :thumbsup:

Best I've seen that is most comprehensive would be the NIV Study Bible. No one edition can have everything but it covers quite a bit of information. One person notes are just that coming from one perspective. Not bad, but I like options and opinions.

Theses days you can save a ton of money by purchasing digital editions which I think are available in just about every study edition out there.

 

I've used the NLT Life Application Study Bible too. Granted, it's not much of a theological heavyweight kind of study Bible, but OTOH since I'm not a preacher/pastor it suits me quite well. I especially like the challenging questions it often contains. The maps are also quite helpful as well.

No one study Bible will ever please and/or fulfill absolutely everyone's expectations 100+%.

Asking which is the "best" study Bible is kinda the same as asking which is the "best" motor vehicle.

 

I've been using the NIV Study Bible of late and am enjoying it. It is very comprehensive in content which I sometimes find a disadvantage because it can lack clarity given there are sometimes multiple opinions on interpretation.

 

I've been using the HCSB Study Bible, and find it's study notes very comprehensive, and well done by a committee of scholars.

 

The AV1611, with all its extratextual material, followed by the Geneva Bible with all its footnotes.

 

I like large print bibles so rarely use a study bible - they get too big and heavy. I usually carry a reference bible.

But I found a Quest study bible a short while ago and liked it.

It answered simple questions and provided simple answers

I used the questions to provoke discussion during group study sessions

One of the men in my Saturday morning study is elderly and has two studies that he leads in an elder care home. He liked the study bible and the simplicity of the format. It fit his needs well.

Well I gave away another bible...

...and so once again don't use a study bible.

I use the NIV Study Bible, the ESV Study Bible, and the Life Application KJV Study Bible. I carry my NASB text only bible to church and also use it for devotional reading.

 

My two favorite are the Life Application Study Bible (NASB) and the Holman Christian Study Bible. I have an NIV, KJV, and Ryrie(KJV) Study Bibles but they just don't compare to the Life Application and the Holman (IMHO).
