    Washington (CNN) – With the stroke of a pen Thursday, President Barack Obama gave himself and his wife Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives.

    The new law, which passed the House and Senate in December, designates that all former U.S. presidents who served after January 1, 1997, along with their spouses, receive protection from the Secret Service for their entire lifetimes – meaning former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are also covered.

    This bill signed by Obama was also passed by a majority of the Senate and the House.

    Though, the cost may be expensive, I believe it is imperative to protect the life of the POTUS.

    According to the article this simply reversed a decision which had stopped what was the status quo until 1997.

    This is nothing new. Truman, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush I were all given lifetime Secret Service protection as well, under various similar legislation. In fact, it was rather poignant the day Bess Truman died. The security camera in the second floor window across the street from she and Harry's lifetime home in Independence disappeared overnight. The Secret Service went home when Bess did.

    Would this lifetime protection cover presidents in prison?

    If Obama can't keep us distracted from all his scandals he might need it.
