Not really trying to stir the pot. lol Just curious.

Personally, I'm a big fan of hard rock and some metal. I like bands like:
    -Skillet
    -Disciple
    -Pillar
    -Thousand Foot Crutch
    -Red

Some of these bands, particularly Disciple, can have very Biblically-based lyrics. Disciple even provides the verse references on their list of lyrics for many of their songs.

I like quite a variety of music, though. I also like Casting Crowns, Owl City (beautiful music, that), Relient K, Switchfoot, and many of the bands that are played on Christian radio stations.
I like a little classical as well. Canon in D is heaven. I'm learning to play it on the piano currently.

Personally I like the traditional hymn book, but have no problem with any type of music that honors and worships the Lord, in harmony with Scripture. It is a function of personal preference and age. The beat of the music has nothing to do with the message. There was a thread a while back that made the point that none of us would like the music back in Biblical times that had their own unique way of singing hymns and the instruments they used, sometimes to the Psalms.

If those groups speak to you from Scripture, then by all means, find a church that uses them to worship.

It's not my go to, but I do have a few selections of heavy metal on my playlist for the gym.

TFK - Rawk Fist, who doesn't want to throw up their rawk fist?
    TFK - Quicken
    TFK - Break the silence

    Skillet - Hero
    Skillet - Awake and Alive

No offense to heavy-metal Christian bands or their fans, but if I can't understand the lyrics, it doesn't make sense to listen to the music. Maybe it's my 61-year-old ears, or maybe its my memories of the classic rock I listened to in the military and afterward before becoming a Christian that make me turn away from that kind of music. Not a judgment on the music, more a judgment of my conscience.

No I am not. It all sounds angry and therefore will not be able to glorify God.

My first thought was "no", but I do like some of Skillet's songs. So I guess it's "yes." I don't care for the ones that try to mimic the darkness of some of the secular bands - mostly because I don't think that culture is inherently benign and without its own values (whether explicitly expressed or not).

Personally it's not my style of music but I've met a lot of those guys and they are genuine lovers of the Lord.

As an aside, when Disciple played at our church years ago, our pastor came from across the street because the music was so loud and he could hear it from inside his house. He was worried the building would collapse! What did he find? My 4 year old daughter asleep in the front row. LOL Even the guys in the band laughed because no one had ever fallen asleep at one of their concerts before. Yep - that kid could sleep through anything and now at 21 needs an alarm that actually will shake her bed to wake her up! LOL

I'm also not into rap but have also had the privilege to meet a lot of those guys as well. We had Lecrae and Tedashi at our church a few years ago and MAN are those guys amazing. Lecrae went upstairs to meet with the kids who responded to the Gospel and when the whole thing was over, he was still missing. People were wanting to meet him but where was he? Playing basketball and ministering to the kids who he had gone upstairs with! No big prideful stance with this guy! :) Oh - and his wife and kids are LOVELY!

You left out Project 86 and Kutless. Demon Hunter is too extreme for my taste, but like everyone you mentioned. I grew up with Stryper :)

Angry is subjective. Aggressive is more accurate.

I forgot about Kutless. That's another one I like - but never heard of Project 86.

I like some Kutless. :) Need to check out the other two.

Yeah, I discovered through a Christian heavy metal page on Facebook that some of the more extreme metal--super heavy bass, 90% of the vocals screaming--doesn't appeal to me too much. lol I just tend to think that if the purpose of the music is to fit emotions, for lack of better wording, you need to do more than just scream.

Although I did like a few of the songs they had to share. My Heart to Fear, I like a couple of their songs.

Oh, another band I forgot to list:
    -Fireflight--alternative metal

It's cool. Stay true to your convictions. :)

It is a little hard to understand sometimes. It gets easier once you're used to listening to it, some have no trouble at all. I still need to look up the lyrics sometimes, though.

    Another one--October Glory
They're a band originating not too far from where I live. They do hard rock, but have some softer songs as well and have apparently been added to quite a few Christian radio stations lately.
I've seen them twice. They led some truly Spirit-filled worship and prayed over those who came forward. Nice people, too.

I was raised on secular Rock & Roll so to my tastes, Christian Rock is an absurdity & to some degree your backing it up by your commentary. Still Im of a era in the past so I would most likely be resistant to it & that hasnt stopped its production....so Let Go & Let God.

I was raised anti-rock and know the arguments against it. A couple of years ago I came to my own conclusions after a lot of thought and consideration, namely that of music being neutral, and began listening to Christian rock while being careful and on the lookout for anything that looked wrong. Along the way I discovered musical tastes I didn't know I had, because I had never allowed myself to find out previously.

But I respect that not everyone is going to agree with me. I trust we all do our best to honor God and live a Christian life. If a man considers something sinful, to him it is. So I try to avoid getting in the way of others' convictions. The last thing I want is to be a stumbling block.

See Im not sure we are connecting completely (or not). My music & the music of my youth was all soundly Rock. I love the stuff & so I dont see any near compatibility to Christian Music....of any type. Lots of R&R can portray man at his worst.....for example: Some of this glorifies Sex & Drugs.....so , oh you know what Im saying....I dont see its comparability.

I would far more appreciate christian music (made to glorify the Lord) use another format. Now thats just my opinion....probably speaking for most of my age group. However, my son (22 YO) plays the Sax, Guitar & Base, tells me he doesnt like Christian Rock either ....so.....

I do enjoy the more mellow early praise/worship music (think The Maranatha Singers, Praise Strings, early Don Moen).

Even before I was saved (April, 1966) I enjoyed the more "secular" renditions of music such as what the early Lettermen sang (really rich 3-part harmony) and the Hollyridge Strings' versions of the works by, say, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the 4 Seasons.

While I'm on the subject, I wonder if any of you out there know how I can get ahold of the CD's that are featured in what's called "The Instrumental Praise Series"? I believe this series has at least 4 different CD's & I think they're a product of Brentwood Records / Provident Music. The LifeWay store that's closest to me (Mt. Juliet TN) doesn't seem to have any way of acquiring them, and most likely an individual person can't buy them by him/her self. [Could be wrong about that....Wouldn't be the 1st time!!]

Oh yes, and y'all out there in BB land, have a Happy Constitution Day [Sept 17]!!:wavey:

In my view it's the lyrics that make the message. I'm aware that a lot of classical rock portrays bad messages, but I don't see that as being in integrated into the music.

My mom doesn't like rock largely because it reminds her of a time away from God in her teenage years. And that's understandable. For her, it may be a stumbling block.

For me it's quite the opposite, however. My teenage years were largely spent joyfully discovering God, and I often listened and praised God while listening to Christian rock in my late teens.
Which wasn't too long ago. I'm only 20.

Do you actively participate with a band?

I am attempting to get a number of people together to sing in A Capella in a 4 part harmony, but Im getting resistance. For me, that is a great way to sing Gods praises & participate. Its called "Sacred Harp" music & its again becoming popular.....even in the East. Both Princeton University & groups in NYC are now forming & competing.
